The father, Duncan McAlpine was listed as a doctor (he was actually an Apothecary - Chemist or Druggist for the Americans), he died in 1859 but I reckon there may be something in the local paper about the death.
Thomas Wilkieson (an army sergeant) died sometime between 1841 and 1851, his wife Ann Miller was born in London about 1796. All of her 6 children were born in Armagh.
Normally when I see an Irish Wilkinson/Wilkieson I'd suggest looking for McQuilkins however, if Thomas Wilkieson was English then Wilkinson is more likely. He may just have been serving in Ireland.
Ann Miller, Sarah's mother, died in 1879. She would have been over 80 but Sarah McAlpine reports her as 66. Sarah didn't know her maternal grandmother's name, this casts some doubt on the accuracy of the grandfather being Lewis Miller a watchmaker.
IGI is down just now so I couldn't check anything else.
Hope this was a help.

It's possible to track the McAlpines quite far back (well 1765ish) to Luss.

Thank you very much for all the info Andy...
How were you able to find so much detail? Duncan and Sarah's marriage certificate does show Duncan's father as Doctor of Medecine, where would I look to find the info you have provided.
And the info on Thomas and Ann is fantastic, again how would I have a look at this?
sincerely,
David

All the info is available on Scotland's People but I did use the IGI (while it was working) and the 1881 census discs for cross checks.
The marriage cert stated that both father's were dead so, after a check on children born to Duncan McAlpine it was possible to find a rough age. There was only one death of a Duncan McA in Dumbarton in the period from 1855 until the date of his son's marriage. All the details fitted so it was the correct person.
There is only one death of an Ann (Miller) Wilkieson in the area from the date of marriage until 1905, yours.
Sometimes reading the other bits of info on a certificate gives clues as to yet unknown details.
If any of the children lived until 1908 there is a chance that they claimed a state pension, if so, since they were born in Ireland, they would have to get official copies of the 1841 census in Ireland to show their ages and the 1851 from Scotland.
Forgot to mention that Thomas was a Chelsea Pensioner so there should be more records south of the border.
Was that the correct Duncan Bell?

Thanks Andy
So the information such as Army Sergeant, Chelsea Pensioner, Apothecary. This all came from the death Certificates?
I do beleive this is my Duncan BELL and Margaret McLEAN, but I do not have any proof. There daughter Sarah has about the right age to be married to Benjamin M R McALPINE.
I think I have found Margaret McLEAN, if her father was John McLEAN and Ann(e) ODONNELL, she may have had another name Catherine. Searching IGI shows a Catherine McLEAN born in Greenock which is not to far from Inverkip(if I am not mistaken, using maps.google.co.uk) born to a John McLEAN and Ann ODONNELL, as well as some siblings. The reason I say Catherin may be the same person is that she was born in 1855 and doing the math from census, Margaret was b. 1bt 1855.
Does this make any sense?
Can you tell me, how do you access your Griffith evaluation information?
Is the only way to access the info in Ireland. I do have some info from the index on another relative, but am looking to fingd the info from the actual record.
Thanks again...
