Hi Katie
You are researching in the pre 1855 time period where the going gets tough for most folk - its not just you!

Do you know the names of Thomas's children? If so, and if he used the Scottish naming pattern, the the name of his first son would very likely be the same name as his father, and the name of his second daughter would most likely be the name of his mother. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, but can sometimes help narrow the options down on possible parents. Back then, it is most unlikley that the names of his children will not reflect the names of his parents in some way.

If he married in 1820, I'd be guessing a birth around 1795, or 5 years either side of that as a starting point, although it is of course possible he was born before this. You mentioned in another post that you have seen the 1841 census - I think you have menitoned his age was given as 45? Although ages were rounded down to the nearest 5, it will still give you an indication of the time of his birth. The age of 45 in the 1841 suggests he was between 45-49 at that time, so d.o.b between 1792 - 1796 is likley.

In the 1841 for Scoonie Fife, was Thomas born "in county" or not? Again this can help you narrow down where he was born. As I mentioned before, the 1851, when it comes online should help. It should give an age and a place of birth for Thomas which would help...you just need to be patient, along with the rest of us!
Best wishes
Lesley
