Help required reading census - Mary Donaldson.....

I have been trying to trace a Mary Donaldson who was born in 1890, her mother died in 1896. She appears on the 1981 census with her family but isn't with them on the 1901 census.

I know she lived to adulthood as she was gased in an accident (with her sister) when they were adults. The sister was my dad's grandmother.

I think I may have found her (on the 1901) but am unsure of the people she is with, I think the surname maybe 'Hamsley' and what is her relationship to them.

Can anyone help?

Hi Julie
THe name does look as you said I think.

The relationship looks like it may be "sister" - compare with the shape of "sister" 3 lines down the page, but I couldn't be sure.

I'd suggest a contact form to SP as although the rest of the page seems pretty clear, the crucial bit of information that you need is very faint. Whenever I've been sent photocopies of a page by SP they have been much clearer than the on-screen image.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Julie,

The name is Hambley according to the 1881 census.

Dwelling: Maxwell Land Comotz Road
Census Place: Blantyre, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203615 GRO Ref Volume 624 EnumDist 7 Page 43
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Thomas HAMBLY M 25 M England
Rel: Head
Occ: Coal Miner
Catherine HAMBLY M 26 F Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
John H. HAMBLY 1 M Blantyre, Lanark, Scotland

The relationship on the 1901 looks like .......sister.
Maybe the 1881 will help.

There is a Hambley / Donaldson marriage in Old Monkland in 1898. Might be worth a look if you think Mary is yours.

Regards,
Annette M

Thank you for that , I will further into the name.

I was hoping it doesnt say sister, as that won't tie in with are of her sister's marriages.

thanks away

If you look at the next family down where there is a Jennie McMillan who is listed as a sister. You can see that the flow of the last part of the lettering is equal to the post for Mary Donaldson.
Dempsey, Bon(n)ar, Brown, O'Donnell (2), Morgan, McDonald, McNeillis, Graham, Moor, Gallocher, Donnelly, Dougan.
Hampton, Stewart (2), Wilson (2), Main, Thomson, MacPherson, Thaw, Watson, Barclay, Kinloch, Brand (2) Murray, Harper. Edward(s) Nicol

Thanks David

All your help has proved that this is probably not my Mary Donaldson. After looking at the marriage of Susan Donaldson - John Hambley, Susan's parents are completely different to Mary's so they can't be sisters.

The investigates continue..

thanks again, Julie
