Confusing entry on IGI.....

Post by Caroline » Mon Mar 20, 2006 2:32 pm

I was searching for my Workman relatives on the IGI when I came across the following record :

ELIZABETH WORKMAN
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 07 APR 1822 West Kilbride, Ayr, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JAMES OR JOHN WORKMAN
Mother: ANN OR JANET SIMPSON

I found this quite confusing as these are two seperate couples.

James Workman was married to Ann Simpson and John was married to Janet.

So who are the parents ?

Caroline
Hood, Nicholson, Strang, Taylor, Wallace - GLASGOW
Ritchie, Robertson, Smith, Summers - FIFE
Henderson, Montgomery, Rutherford - HAUGH OF URR
Hart, McAdam, Young - DUNBARTONSHIRE
Caldwell, Roberts - RENFREWSHIRE

Hi Caroline

Perhaps the only way to find out who her parents were is to look for her death on ScotlandsPeople. Her parents should be indicated. I see that there are only 11 Eli*abeth WORKMAN deaths between 1855 and 1920. They might be worth looking at.

Looking for a marriage is also a possibility, but the OPRs don't always give parents' names.

Regards
Catriona

Hello Caroline,

I don't know why it has been transcribed that way - maybe that's the way it was written.
I'd say James and Ann were her parents as Janet was busy giving birth to other children.

Thanks very much for your help Annette and Jack.

It will be interesting to see the original entry when it goes online and to find out if it was confusing or the mistake was in the transcription. I think that John and Janet were probably the witnesses to the baptism, but hopefully all will be revealed before the end of the year.
