I have tried to register on Scotlands People, but I cannot make it work. I have JAVA on my computer and I have no idea why it doesn't work. I have a MAC so maybe that makes a difference. It is so frustrating!
So--does anyone have access to the 1871 census for Beith Ayrshire? I want to know if there is a listing for John Stewart and wife, Janet Cameron. He was born in Beith about 1810 (give or take a couple years). She was born in Stewarton in 1810, but they lived in Beith. I wrote to obtain the death certificate since that could have the names of John's parents. John and Janet Stewart were still alive in 1861, but I was advised to narrow the date of death more closely. Can anyone tell me if they or one of them is still living in 1871? I can do it the hard way by reading LDS film for Beith 1871, but I'd sure like to make it easier. The number of John Stewarts around is incredible! I have struggled with that problem for a LONG time.
Thank you!

A Mac can create problems, but they shoudn't be insurmountable.
Suggest you keep on trying, and don't hesitate to seek asistance from ScotlandsPeople via contact forms.
One member of the User Group is a Mac user with an obvious special interest in the situation whose name I'll happily pass on to you............
In the meantime, a crosscheck search in the female death index using both surnames quickly produces Janet's death in Beith in 1874, - knowing that she is shown as married, and his approximate age, John's death a few years later in Beith quickly follows ....... as if often the case he stayed in the same location, - not always the case, in such situations it's far from uncommon for the widow/widower to move in with a son or daughter who can sometimes be quite a distance away ..........
