Why did SP decide not to include parents names as an option when searching for a Statutory birth ? or death come to that.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

It's not so much that SP have not indexed the parents' names, but GROS in New Register House have not indexed them that way for the years available on SP. So to create such an index would involve every single birth certificate from that era being read, interpreted and indexed. For more recent birth certificates, the mother's maiden surname is indexed in NRH, but I think (from memory) that is from somewhere in the mid-1920s onwards (and I think 1855 on its own). As that era of birth certificates will not be available online for another 20 years or more, I don't foresee any change to the current situation.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
