McGill's in Wishaw early 1900's .....

Post by dmd1164 » Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:22 am

Looking for some assistance please?

Our McGill's were in the Wishaw and Motherwell areas in the late 1800's early 1900's.

Thomas McGill born 1906 son of John McGill and Elizabeth Wetherall (Main Street, WIshaw).

John McGill was the son of Thomas McGill (B1850) and Jane Scobie (B 1848) they were married in Glasgow 1870.

Elizabeth Wetherall daughter of James Wetherall and Janet Marshall. They were married at Chapelton Glassford.

If anyone can find any siblings I'd be one happy Aussie.

Thanks in advance
Donna

Hi Donna

Not sure if you have any 1881 census info but this might help point the way to other lines. This sure looks like the parents and siblings of John....

Hi JustJean

You've come through with the goods yet again. Obviously Jane was pregnant with John McGill - he's not listed in the census and going back and checking - he was born in 1881 so must have just been after the census was taken.

I haven't had much luck finding anyone on the Scotish census - certainly not finding anything on the free cen site.

You're wonderful.

Many thanks
Donna

Hi Donna,
Moving slightly away from your McGills, was Elizabeth WETHERALL's father James a railway engine driver?
There's a James, 45, with that occupation at Hamilton in the 1881 census, with wife Janet, 31, born Glassford.

Hi donna

You commented that you were having no joy finding people either on FreeCen or scotlandspeople.
Are you using wildcards in your searches?

Think of all possible alternative spellings for their fore and surnames.
Where possible substitute an * in place of one or more letters (e.g. instead of the variations of Mac put in M* plus the name. For McGill try M*G*l. That would bring up McGill, MacGill, Mac Gill, Mc Gill, McGil, McGall. You might get some other odd names at first but you soon learn to plan it out.
I was looking for OMAN and found them transcribed as OWAN but I put in O*n. It could have brought up OWEN as well but when you reach the desparation stage you'll try anything won't you?

Hi Jack

Yes those details against the Wetherall's do match the marriage registration has James Wetherall down as a Engine Keeper Blast Furnace so yes sounds similar. Janet Marshall is his wife so I'll check it out.

Hi Russell

Will definately have another go with using the wild cards. I've nothing to loose and besides I've received the most wonderfull help from this site. People with more experience - sharing information and ideas - I've really appreciated every bit of help I've gotten so far.

Thanks one and all.

Post by Jack » Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:57 am

Hi Donna,
Here's that 1881 cens that might be Elizabeth WETHERALL's parents - what date was she born?
And if it is them, then this might also be James' u/m sister Helen aged 43.

I'd think you'll already have this 1872 marriage & 1874 birth from the IGI.
Your Elizabeth's BC will hopefully match those of the above 3 children, and has this wee Isabella died before 1881?

Hi Jack

Your information has given me a lot more help.

We've managed to find where some of the McGill's are buried thanks to a lovely chap Ron Porteous.

He's given us this information:-
Marion Ferguson Evans, 261 Bellshill Road, Motherwell, age, 71yrs. buried, 7th.June, 1951 (Married) Parents: David Martin & Isabell Sorbie ?

Benjamen Evans, 261 Bellshill Road, Motherwell, age, 74yrs. buried, 29th.March,1954 (Widower) Parents: John Evans & Maria Pemmington.

Thomas McGill, 61 Alexander Street, Wishaw, age, 51yrs. buried, 13th.January 1960 (Married) Parents: John McGill & Elizabeth Witherall. (Note the name spelt differently - this is what confused me D)

These are the only McGill’s that I can find, there doesn’t seem to be any children, or Thomas’s wife.

I've received the most wonderfull help from quite a few people and I'm eternally gratefull.

More soon - have to get ready for work.

Regards

Donna
