Lost Images

Post by DavidWW » Tue Feb 22, 2005 2:54 pm

Your assistance please..........

A couple of people have reported that some of their images have gone missing from their "Viewed Images" on scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Will those of you who have been using scotlandspeople.gov.uk for some time please check and see whether your images are still there.........

If this is a more general problem then it needs to be brought to the notice of GROS/SoL asap.

Please keep a note of any emails or report forms that you submit to GROS/SoL, as well, obviously, as the reply

PS In case you don't already do something different, never ever rely on image storage at SP as you have no control over the situation. Instead, always but always download images to your own 'puter

Hi Davie,My images are there but from time to time one goes missing.eg.I had the marriage of some long losts and wanted to check out some detail on it.I was on site at the time so I just went to previously viewed images and couldn't find it.I dug it out of my files so I know it should have been there. This wasn't the first time but it was the first time I could prove I wasn't crazy.(no snickering in the back)

Hi David,

As far as I'm aware all my images are still there but will bear in my mind what you said about downloading them as I don't always.

All the best,
Alison

Do you have any record of the missing images and the "when" ?

If it happens again, please keep a careful note ........

Thanks

Always but always but always

But then you will encounter the problem of how you store/index them on your own 'puter.... I use the naming format "Forename Surmame year Record Type.tif", e.g "David WEBSTER 1946 Birth.tif", or "John WEBSTER 1901 Census.tif". For marriages I might also use "WEBSTER YOUNG 1868 Marriage.tif"

The recently released Google Desktop Search is brilliant, BTW

Hi Davie,Don't know what record I might have except i have an image and it's not on my previously viewed images.I mentioned it and they said I must have deleted it.I haven't deleted any since I started in Oct.
Sorry don't think I can help with proof.I'll look some more later and see if I notice any others missing.

(a) Give me the full details, please, and

(b) Submit a contact form to SP, giving them the full details, and asking them just what is going on, in view of their "guarantee" that once viewed and paid for, an image will always be there on the site for a registered member ........

Thanks

Davie

I also had at least two missing records that I know I paid for on SP.

I wrote to SP and they replied that they do not have the facility to remove files from your account, and that records cannot be removed accidentally.

They were nice enough to give me the credits to repurchase the images that were lost.

They may not have the "facility to remove images", but, as the following reply to Stuart Dalgleish indicated, re-indexing can mess things up !!

Hello Stuart,

I can see that you have viewed a lot of images.

Sometimes the database indexing changes if you viewed some images a while ago, they may not work if you are going back to them.

I have allocated 20 credits to your account so you can grab these images again.

Kind regards,

Jamie
