Help with reading 1851 Census Image please .....

Post by mallog » Wed Apr 05, 2006 2:04 pm

Hopefully I have uploaded a census image of Ann Gilray/Gilroy to the gallery. Can you give me your thoughts on the birthplace of James and Ann. I thought she would have been born in Lasswade or Penicuick but I keep thinking it looks like Portugal !!!??

Hi Mallog,

I would agree with Portugal and the writing after it may say B. Sub. (British Subject).

All the best,

Before you ask the question, it's unlikely that there is a Portuguese civil record of her birth, as these records only began in 1832, and only initially on an optional basis. Catholic church records do go back much earlier.

It might be worth a letter to ....

Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo
Largo de S. Bento
1200 LISBON
