Hi all,
I just read at another site that it was possible to search birth records using the christian name (and surname) of one or both parents. I have always thought this was not so...if this IS the case, can someone please let me know how it is done?

Hi
There is a site for Orkney connections where you can search for a child by their name or by the parent(s)name - it then gives you all the children in that family. I use the site a lot for my Orkney folk - it is however for the OPR's not the stat records. There is also the census for Westray on it.

Thanks, that's what I thought too...I don't think it is worth correcting the person as it was an old post. The person did write specifcially Scotland's People.
It would be a wonderful thing if we COULD search the records that way, don't you think? It would probably fill in a lot of those ten year gaps between children where you just KNOW there were more siblings, but they had died between censuses!
Oh well, we can dream.....

Parents names can be used to search Scottish records from 1855 to 1875 on the IGI at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp
One way to do this is via the Hugh Wallis site at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... otland.htm
This allows you to select a batch of records for a parish and search for a surname. You can then refine the search by entering the parents names. Unfortunately, as the database only goes to 1875 it isn't as extensive as Scotland's People, but it can still be useful.
