Hello
can anyone help me out with this little problem
i have been looking for a family called Bickerton
i have them in the 1861 census onwards
but can't heck as like find them in the 1851
all the other census' are in Dawley shropshire ,and Dawley is consistant as being the birthplace in each of the census returns.
In the 1861 the name is recorded as Bigenton,
but no matter what i try in the 1851 they remain elusive.
i am looking for a Samuel Bickerton born 1828 Dawley Shropshire in the 1871 he is recorded as Camuel Bickerton born 1828 Dawley
1861 he is Samuel Bigenton born 1828 Dawley
1851 ????????
any search suggestions welcome &
any help would be appreciated as this is for a friend who is making a trip from Australia in the next few day's in search of her ancestors.
kind regards maggie

Re: Dawley 1851
Hello Maggie,
looks like he has been indexed oddly, since all the evidence points to his being in Dawley. You can order the census film for your local LDS centre for a modest fee, but it may take longer to arrive than you and your visitor have. Shropshire Records Office at Shrewsbury (interesting town, well worth visiting) will have the 1851 film, and it should take up to a couple of hours to look through it. However, it is likely that there will be an name index prepared by the local FHS: if so, that will help enormously.
Details of Shropshire Records Office is at http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf . Please note that they do not use the popular CARN ticket so read the part about the reader's ticket.
Regards,
John

There is a Samuel aged 16 listed as living with sisters & brothers & mother
Have you discounted this one because of age?
Recorded as Saml Bickerton brother born Dawley age 16
There is also a Sam born 1829, but he is living with his inlaws - however I think the inlaw may be a litttle weird as he is listed as unmarried iron miner. There is also an Ann listed as unmarried daughter in law - step children perhaps?
This one has the name Sam Biggerton

Hello Trish
thankyou for your message
the Samuel age 16 with brothers sister & mother is not who i am looking for i ruled him out in the 1861 census he too had a wife called Sarah and for a little while i was "barking up the wrong tree" but he could be a connection so not ruled out altogether.
i had seen the one you mention where is is down as son in law yet recorded as un-married with a corbitt family and think it could be possibly him.
thankyou once again for your help it is appreciated

Hello Maggie
I thought I would look at the IGI to determine the "son-in-law" connection and although I didn't initially find any births, I did find the following
Samuel Bickerton married Susanna Hide 20 Feb 1825 Kemberton Stropshire. Kemberton is only a few miles from Dawley.
Susan Bickerton married Thomas Corbett 24 march 1836 Wrockwardine, Stropshire
Although this doesn't prove that Sam the son-in-law is your Samuel, it does suggest that he is in fact the step-son of Thomas Corbett/Corbitt, probably the son of Samuel Bickerton and his mother is probably Susan/Susanna Corbett previously Bickerton nee Hide.
Looking at the IGI under the name Biggerton, I found 4 christenings
ANN BIGGERTON 18 SEP 1825 Dawley Magna, Shropshire
MARY BIGGERTON 22 OCT 1826 Dawley Magna, Shropshire
SAMUEL BIGGERTON 19 APR 1829 Dawley Magna, Shropshire
MARTHA BIGGERTON 17 JUL 1831 Dawley Magna, Shropshire
Parents Samuel and Susanna(h). Batch C008593

Hello Trish
many thanks for your help
i had found Thomas marrying a susan Bickerton on the IGI
and a christening of a Samuel in 1829 in the April to parents Samuel & Susanna and i had saw the marriage for a Samuel &Susanna Hide
But i hadn't even thought of looking for siblings silly me
the names of his siblings are names that Samuel born 1828 used for his daughters. So a huge thankyou for them.I will try now to locate them in the census'
thankyou once again for helping it's appreciated.
