Help finding ancestor in 1851 Census .....
After waiting patiently for the 1851 Census, I set out to find my gggrandfather Patrick Lynn/Linn who came over from Ireland - heaven knows when - and was married in Stirling in August 1851. I can not find him anywhere, or with any variation of spelling or wild cards. I have found his wife to be Bridget Logan/Louge in St Ninian's, Bannockburn, but no sign of Patrick - any help would be appreciated. I find it hard to believe that he would not be in Scotland in March 1851 when he was married at St Mary's, Stirling in August 1851, and the register said that they were both of the parish.
Researching names: McQuade; Lynn; McSporran; Sweeney; Madden; Smith; McIlvaine; Burns; Burgess; McFarlane; Deignan; Barr; McMurchie: Dumbarton/Glasgow/Campbeltown/Co Tyrone, Monaghan, Down, Derry and Donegal

Hi emamc and welcome to TalkingScot!
I had a look for your Patrick and there sure aren't any likely looking prospects.
I wonder if you know his approximate age in 1851.....and also what his occupation was on later census returns? Since Patrick and Peter are often interchangeable I looked for Peter as well. There was one....a 30 yr old Irish immigrant boarder working in Railway Labor and living in Shotts. Spelled his last name Lynn. Perhaps a possibility but really looks like a long Shott.....
(somedays the puns are irresistable
It is also possible that he was missed from the census....was not in Scotland yet or had traveled back to Ireland when the census was taken....or is very badly mistranscribed.....
Sorry....but best wishes anyhow!

Patrick Lynn
Hi Jean
Thanks for the reply. From my calculations I think Patrick was born between 1825 and 1828 so we would have been about 23/25 and in all the other census I have found him in he was a gardener. Patrick's sister Ann married a Frances Gallacher - spelt Francies Galloacher in FamilySearch in June 1850 in the same church as Patrick and Bridget, so I feel the family lived around the Stirling area. Strangely though both Patrick and Bridget and Ann and Francis had moved to Dumbarton by the end of 1851, and both families remained there. Maybe it is just one of those things!!

Patrick Lynn
Hi Pinkshoes
I have had a look at the Lynn/Linn's in Stirling and am sure there must be a connection, but could not find one. The children all have family names. Patrick did have a brother who was born in Ireland, and off the top of my head I am not sure if he was Peter or John. I will check my records and get back to you with more info. As well as Patrick and Ann there was Rosannah, Margaret and John/Peter. The parents were Bernard and Helen McCready. They came from Shanmaghry in County Tyrone. At Anne's wedding in St Mary's Stirling in June 1850 the records said Ann daughter of Barnard, both of this parish. So I assumed that Barnard was still alive and that the family were living in Stirling, but Patrick and Ann may have been over by themselves.

Patrick Lynn
Hi Pinkshoes
Sorry but Patrick's brother was Peter, his wife was a Mary McGeachy. Do you have any info on your John Lynn, who his parents were or would that be asking too much. I have some of Patrick's cousins and his Uncle and Aunts names and details. I think they came across as a family and all lived relatively near each other.

Hi Elizabeth - I was just having a prowl around to see if I could find anything about this guy (again). I'm afraid I don't know his parents or where he was born - or even when exactly. I know he married Elizabeth Aitken in 1849 in Larbert. They had two sons, William born 1849/50 ish and John born about 1852. John the son was born at sea, near New York but whether they were coming or going, who knows. I've had a look at immigration records and there is one John Lynn about the right age, born in Ireland, but I can't get the rest of the family to tie in.
Elizabeth his wife turns up with the weans in 1861 census, but no sign of John. Whether he stayed in New York (if he ever went) or came back and died in Scotland before 1861
There's a whole other bag of intrigue surrounding the widow Linn but that's for another thread ... ...
One day something will turn up and the whole mystery will be solved, hopefully setting us both straight in one go!
Best wishes
Pinkshoes
PS Just realised I called Elizabeth the widow LINN - that's actually correct - John snr spells his name Lynn when he marries, but it changes to Linn after that. By the time it gets to the last generation its changed again to Lunn

Patrick Lynn
Hi Pinkshoes
Hopefully in the next few weeks I will have access to the parish records for the Lynn's in Shanmaghry, Co Tyrone. From this I hope to identify the family, and will let you know if I find a John.
Good=Luck with the searching

Re: Patrick Lynn
Hi Elizabeth,
This looks very much like a red herring.
In the High St, Dumbarton 1851 there is a Patrick FINN, 25, general labourer, born Sligo.
With him is brother Luke 22, sister Bridget 18, but no John and they aren't with parents.
Lodging with them is Patrick Degman 20, and Michael Canley 20.
