Prudence McGinlay 1881 Renfrew .....

Post by ninatoo » Mon Apr 24, 2006 2:02 am

Hi all,

Can someone please have a look on the census index for 1881 for Prudence McGinlay and her family? I have found them at SP, but it is very confusing, and I am hoping the index might give me a better idea. It appears that there are some married children living there with their own children, and I am trying to sort out who belongs to who. It has a lovely error, too, where 1 year old James is listed as a general labourer :D .

Thanks in advance,

Nina

Thanks so much for this Jean,

It does make things a bit clearer, but now I am wondering who the second Thomas (the other head) is, as there is already a son listed for the first Thomas 'head'.

I am wondering if that could be an error, as I did do a search for an Ann marrying a McGinlay, and the name that came up was Andrew McGinlay (not there, but that happens). I will now try a search for a Thomas McGinlay who married an Ann, too, and see what comes up.

Thanks again,

Nina

One of two things is going on.

Either a mis-transcription of the 1881 census entry, or the enumerator being confused by two families in the one household, as there should only ever be one "Head".

Strongly advisable to check the original 1881 microfilm.............

David

PS If you try to sort out the second household of Thomas, 28, and Ann, 28 by looking at the birth register entries of the 4 children, prepare to be confused, as the father is shown as Andrew, albeit his marriage register entry does show his parents as Thomas and Catherine :!:

Yes thanks David, I found the marriage of Andrew and Ann. I am seriously believing that the enumerator got it wrong, as there is one son Thomas in that household, then father who is head, and another Thomas, head.

The elder Thomas must surely be Andrew, but I will try to have a look at the films when at LDS this week. I am not sure what records they hold onsite at my small local branch. Thanks for the advice.

Hi folks,
Seems that the transcriber has just lumped them together because they had the same name, and were at the same address,
but the original page clearly shows a horizontal line drawn between the 2 families.

Ah-hah !!

That's as it should have been, - obviously the 1881 transcriber didn't pick this up, as they should have ........................ and then complicated the matter by getting the given name of the Head of Household for Schedule 61 wrong; always assuming, of course that that Head of Household got it right in the first place !!

Thanks very much Jack!

Now I just need to prove that the the younger "head" Thomas should have been Andrew, which I think can be done by proving that it was Andrew that fathered these children, which seems to be the case at IGI anyway.

I can prove that Andrew was the father in terms of 3 of the 4 kids, but the 4th eludes me !!

Hi david,

It wouldn't be Elia that is escaping you perhaps? I see an Elizabeth at IGI that fits, which means yet another transcription mistake if so...
