help with 1841 .....

Post by skaville » Wed May 03, 2006 10:27 pm

I have the 1841 for my relatives but cannot remember where its from, can someone help. It says parish of Holytown and the road/village etc is Chapelhall. As its says none of the Alexander family were born in the county i am wondering where they came from. They ended up in Glasgow and i think this is where the census is from.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark
Holytown and the road/village etc is Chapelhall
Think it might be in the area of Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Its not part of Glasgow - they are, I beleive, all small towns about 12 miles or south east of Glasgow.

bst wishes
Lesley
Researching:
Midlothian & Fife - Goalen, Lawrie, Ewart, Nimmo, Jamieson, Dick, Ballingall.
Dunbartonshire- Mcnicol, Davy, Guy, McCunn, McKenzie.
Ayrshire- Lyon, Parker, Mitchell, Fraser.
Easter Ross- McCulloch, Smith, Ross, Duff, Rose.

Re help with 1841

Hi Mark,
Sorry can't help with the 1841, but some forenames & ages may help for 1851....
There are about 1240 folk with the surname ALEXANDER in Lanarkshire 1851.
(over 900 in Glasgow alone)
I "might" be able to say where your family could be found in that year (birthplaces should be shown).
Jack
ps, Hi Lesley, it may be a wee bit further north of Wishaw - Chapelhall is just south of Airdrie.
And you're right it's not in Glasgow.

Thanks for the reply. Managed to find it on a map. It seems the Alexanders were there in 1841 but not born there. Then they were back in Glasgow in 1851. Walter was the father, with children John, Walter, Helen, Isabella etc. Any idea why they moved out for a while?
Cheers again,
Mark

Hi Mark,
These from a name index, but they should be easily enough found on ScotlandsPeople.
And the census page should have all of their birthplaces.
As to why they moved?
Depending on occupation, but the reason was often work related - looking for? better wages? conditions?

Cheers,
I do have them on the 1851 in Glasgow. Walter senior was a sawyer so he must have gone out there to work for a while. 1 child was also born in Stirlingshire!!
Thanks again.

Hi Mark,
Glad you've got them in 1851, and most likely in 1861 too!

Yeah,
Got them on the other census's. Pity theres no 1831. They venture out of Glasgow for the 41 but return again. With the surnames being common how would i find Walter Seniors birth? Not sure where he is from except Glasgow.

Hi Mark,
If you know Walter's parents' names (say from his DC) then that would be a start.
But always the possibility his birth never was recorded. :(
Do you know of any siblings?

Hi Jack,
I have the D/C of Walter Jnr in 1871. His parents were Walter Alexander(farmer) and Margaret Mcdonald(with them on the 1841). I presume his father died before 1841 as his mother is with them in Holytown. Think she must have died between 41 & 51. Havent a clue about brothers or sisters for him.
