I have the 1841 for my relatives but cannot remember where its from, can someone help. It says parish of Holytown and the road/village etc is Chapelhall. As its says none of the Alexander family were born in the county i am wondering where they came from. They ended up in Glasgow and i think this is where the census is from.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark

Lesley
Think it might be in the area of Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Its not part of Glasgow - they are, I beleive, all small towns about 12 miles or south east of Glasgow.Holytown and the road/village etc is Chapelhall

Lesley

Re help with 1841
Hi Mark,
Sorry can't help with the 1841, but some forenames & ages may help for 1851....
There are about 1240 folk with the surname ALEXANDER in Lanarkshire 1851.
(over 900 in Glasgow alone)
I "might" be able to say where your family could be found in that year (birthplaces should be shown).
Jack
ps, Hi Lesley, it may be a wee bit further north of Wishaw - Chapelhall is just south of Airdrie.
And you're right it's not in Glasgow.

Hi Mark,
These from a name index, but they should be easily enough found on ScotlandsPeople.
And the census page should have all of their birthplaces.
As to why they moved?
Depending on occupation, but the reason was often work related - looking for? better wages? conditions?
--
1851 census 622 (Barony - Calton)
Walter ALEXANDER, 38
Janet, 39
Helen, 15
John, 14
Isabella, 9
Janet, 8
Walter, 7
Andrew, 5
Margaret, abt 1

Hi Jack,
I have the D/C of Walter Jnr in 1871. His parents were Walter Alexander(farmer) and Margaret Mcdonald(with them on the 1841). I presume his father died before 1841 as his mother is with them in Holytown. Think she must have died between 41 & 51. Havent a clue about brothers or sisters for him.
