Going to Australia about 1856 - any records available?

Post by Pat Bostock » Fri May 26, 2006 9:48 am

Hi,

I have Matthew Cargin and his second wife Agnes Marshall who married in May, 1856. They then travelled to Australia & I have found them living in Ballarat, Victoria. On Matthew Cargin's death, he is listed as having lived in Ballarat for 26 years - death in November, 1883. So that tells me that they must have arrived about 1856 or 1857.

I have tried to check in Victoria for their arrival without success.

Does anyone know whether there is information available regarding passengers leaving Scotland & going to Australia?

Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hi Pat

I too cannot find my THOMAS ELBORN arriving in Australia around the same period.

I have him in Scotland up to the 1851 census, then there is a marriage in 1852 to a Jane Brown ? if it's him though.

Then he pops up in Traralgon Creek Victoria listed as my G Grandmothers father.

I have searched so many places, every port in Australia, even to see if he went via Canada or New Zealand, but no luck.

Anyone got any tips out there??

Pat have you checked other states? I will have a look at my local society when I am there next, & get back to you

Dear Kym,

Thanks for your reply. I am in NSW - so I will keep your family name in mind while I am researching for my Matthew Cargin.

Regards,
Pat.

Hi Pat

No luck with the CARGIN search.

They are NOT listed in the Assisted Immigrants to Morten Bay 1848-59

They are NOT listed in the Assisted Immigrants to NSW 1844-59

There is a JAMES aged 25 & a MARY aged 24 arrived in Victoria on
the Columbia in 1857....but you have probably already seen that.

I will keep me eye out for you.
