Ha I thought when Ancestory put the 1841 census on line a way to find my elusive Ross family without spending too much!
However still no sign. I am looking for a John Ross about 40 yrs of age, his wife Margaret about 30yrs of age and their daughter Elizabeth or Betsy as she was transribed as in the 1851 but no luck. I thought it would be easy looking for Elizabeth as in the 1851 it said she was born in Dechmont. there are quite a few John & Margaret Ross households but none with young Lizzie, anyone got any pointers.?
Thanks in advance
Bertha

Hi Bertha
Saw your post about Elizabeth/Betsy Ross. I'm sure we've already exchanged info but just in case - I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth/Betsy Ross. She was born 4/4/1827 in Elgin, and was the daughter of Donald Ross (bc1801) who married Betsy Falconer (b c 1801) on 10/6/1826. Donald was a limestone quarrier.
She had six brothers (George, Angus, Donald, Henry, William, and John) and two sisters (Aloes and Grace). Aloes may have been Alice.
See you're also looking for Nicholsons - seems funny that we're both looking for both surnames!

Ross 1841
Hi Liz
Yes I think we have been in touch before.
My Elizabeth/Betsy is the daughter of John Ross & Margaret Primrose born about 1837 in Dechmont according to the 1851 census. In 1851 they were living in Gorgie area of Edinburgh but can find no sign of them in Edinburgh, Midlothian or West Lothian in 1841. Even tried looking up Elizabeth/Betsy and many other derivatives of Elizabeth Primrose but no luck. According to the 1851 census, this couple had no other children in the 1841 time span. No sign on the OPRs either.
So I'm one of the many descended from nowhere!
Yes it is funny we have 2 names in common.
My Nicolson's are my 3 x gr grandparents James Nicolson & Isabella Telford m. 1824 in Dunddingston Edinburgh, my 2 x gr grandad was their son Alexander.
The family lived in the Duddingston & Canongate areas of Edinburgh and I think may have had some sort of shop as my gran and her mother both had shop premises in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Well of to have a go at the 1841 again. Took some time on Ancestory so best use it.
Regards
Bertha
