Family Ship's Captain might only have been a Stoker

Post by emanday » Sun Jun 18, 2006 1:22 am

We were always told that our (maternal) Great Grandfather had been a Ship's Captain who had been on clipper ships. My Gran's house contained items from exotic places, not least a heavily carved camphorwood chest he was purported to have used on his voyages. It bears mentioning that the family WAS fairly comfortably off and my Gran was reckoned to have "married beneath her station" with my Cabinetmaker Grandad :!:

However, according to my Gran's 1917 marriage record, by which time her father was dead, his occupation was shown as Steamship Stoker :!:

There's no-one left alive who can confirm which is the truth, so how can I find out about his seafaring career? :?:

Hi Emanday, you could try the LLoyds Captains Register here: http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/capreg.htm . I got good service for 50 GBP, info found by one of the librarians in his coffee break.

Good hunting,

Thrall

Had a quick look, Thrall, and too much to take in all at once, so saved page to print out for further study. However, there seems a better that decent chance I might be able to get some info here.

Thanks so much =D>
