How would a get a copy of the census for Leckmelm and Ullapool for any of the census years. (in the Lochbroom area) I am interested in finding other family members while not knowing their names.
I have downloaded copies of pages when seaching for certain family members, but how would I go about doing a search for just the village. Is it possible to do online as I don't have access to a family history library to view micro fiche etc.
Thanks for any help offered.
How can I obtain the census for an entire village .....

Hi Sandy
To my knowledge it won't be easy!.
Family History Library is your best bet where you can order in a microfilm containing the area and census year you wish to research and then you just visit the library and view the film. You can transcribe to your heart's desire! Of course if you were in Scotland there are tons of places including many local libraries etc. who have the census films available to researchers.
Some census years for certain areas have been transcribed by Scottish family history societies and are available to purchase on disk sets but I'm not certain how many different years that includes and how many different parishes. You could also check FreeCen to see if those areas you've named have been transcribed and added to their online database.
Of course the entire 1881 census is available to purchase from the LDS church. This last item is an invaluable research tool that will pay for itself a hundred times over! Because SP has such thin indexing there is no way to search and view the pages for an entire village or parish....well that is not entirely true....if you could determine where an area began you could just continue to click and buy the next page and then the next page and then the next page......
but gosh that would cost an arm and two legs
to give you an idea...a search in 1881 for anyone any age born in Ullapool living anywhere in the highlands is in excess of 600....a search for anyone any age born lochbroom enumerated in lochbroom is 4185......and i don't find any results yet for leckmelm......
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
thanks for your reply. Yes, if only I was in Scotland it would be so much easier. I can only dream of all those lovely big libraries with all those goodies to search through
But, unfortunately I am all the way over here in Australia. I guess I will just have to try a see if the Lochbroom area is on CD, it is mainly the earlier 1800's that I am interested in, and I don't have the chance to get to a library to view any type of film at the moment.
But, I will just keep on searching. There is a site linked into www.censusfinder.com which is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com and it actually has some census records to search through, none suited to me, but others may be interested.
Thanks again,
Sandy

Given your situation then you may like to consider buying the microfilm of one or more censuses from GROS - see http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... roflm.html - this deals with the 1901 films, but I believe that films of the earlier censuses can also be bought.
£40 is a lot but it may solve your problem.

Hi Sandy
One other thing......from your reply stating your interest lying in the early 1800's.......the earliest census that contains any data of value to genealogists is the 1841....and then on that one no relationships are given within a household! Earlier records were taken for statistical purposes only and contain no names etc. If you wanted something before 1841 you're are out of luck anyway
If you suspect your family may have been living in close proximity then you might just get lucky and by finding one family and then buying a page or two either side of that page you could study the surnames and then utilize the IGI to search for likely marriages and then births to that couple. It's a longshot but it might work.....
Best wishes

Thanks David and Jean. I don't think the 1901 census would be much help to me, as it is mainly 1841/51/61/71 that would most likely be of most benefit to me. Are they likely to be doing the same with the older census records? Are any of them on CD?
If not I think I will just have to bit the bullet and buy extra pages when I can, as I have the main family on those census, but am looking for other rellies, like the in-laws etc. I am just going to have to save my pennies and buy the pages whenever I can and see who I find
Thanks for your help

Hi Sandy
Just a thought ...but if there are is a census index published for the area (not sure if there is....?)that might be worth buying. These usually give just names & ages & place of birth and tell you what page within the census that person can be found on. In that way you could use the index to look for likely suspects, then only view those pages of the census which contained those you were interested in...if you follow!
Don't know if this is of any help:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... 1altan.htm
and this has a few folk only:

You can search the 1841 on ancestry by civil parish / street name / parish number and/or enumeration district - so if you found one person of interest you could remove the name & list everyone meeting your criteria. There are, however no images - only transcript - and you have to pay - for a time period or pay to view.

Hello there
I bought some census indexes from the Scottish Genealogy Society which I find very handy before I spend any money on SP.

More great help, thanks again to you all. This forum is the absolute best. I will have to see if I can find an index of the census for the areas I am interested in. That really sounds like the best way to go. I shall check out the Scottish Genealogy Society and do some searches and see what is available and then try to get the pages I need.
And thanks for the websites Leslie, there are some McLeans in there who may be related in some way, so worth a good look
as they are within the general area my family comes from.
See ya
