Hi margaret and welcome!

I wonder if you know what John and Janet had for children? The only one appearing on the IGI is Christina in 1860 but to be sure you have them on the earlier census it would help to have some other names to cross reference. I think this is your Janet and her daughter and granddaughter on the 1881 census

Dwelling: 13 Clark St
Census Place: New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203696 GRO Ref Volume 651-1 EnumDist 16 Page 35
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Jessie THOMSON W 71 F Peebles, Peeble, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Annuitant
Christina THOMSON U 21 F Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Cotton Weaver
Jessie CASSELL U 11 m F Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Gr Daur

A look in Peebleshire in 1841 only turns up one possible couple....a John THOMSON age 28 and wife Jean age 25. THey have two children and are in Innerleithen. Janet is a highly interchangeable name. It's possible to find it as Jessie, Jane, Jean, or Janet. Is it possible this is them?

Best wishes
Jean

Thomson family in 1851

Post by Jack » Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:02 pm

Hi Margaret,
This looks like your family in 1851, and so a possibility that the family were in Bothwell 1841.
No other details - names etc from the 1851 census index issued by the Lanarkshire FHS.
http://www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk/
--
1851 census 652 (636) Ed 22 p 7 (Old Monkland)
John THOMSON 41, b Stobo, PEE
Janet 35, b Stobo, PEE
George 10, b Bothwell
James 7, b New Monkland
Janet 5, b Old Monkland
Mary 2, b Old Monkland
--
In 1861 the family are in Airdrie, and mother Janet (now as 49) is as born Peebles,
and in addition to the above four children there is Elizabeth 8 and Christina abt 1.

ps, you'll most likely have this 1841 census by now....
The names from the useful CD issued by the GWSFHS - http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/
This index has it as THOMPSON with a "P".
1841 census 652 Ed 22 p 19 (Old Monkland)
John THOMPSON, 30
Janet, 25
George, abt 1
