A brick wall .....
I found my ggg grandfather Thomas Samson in 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. According to these census, his dob would be between 1828 and 1831, place Kilmarnock. Died in Glasgow 6 Dec. 1912. Parents: Peter Robertson Samson born 6 Oct 1806 and m. Agnes Catherine Hendry 26 Jun 1829. Peter was a housepainter.
I have been unable to find Thomas’ birth. I’ve looked for ALL Samsons born within a 10-year period after parents’ marriage, but parents don’t match. Have not found either parents in 1841 or 1851 census. I did find a Thomas and James Samson in the 1841 census in Kilmarnock, dob 1829 and 1832, the rest of the household names are not familiar. It might be my Thomas.
I’ve also looked for the deaths of Peter and Agnes, but no luck. They may have died before 1855.
Any ideas? Could it be possible that parents married, left Scotland, and had children abroad? Then returned to Kilmarnock when Thomas was small. This might explain why I can’t find Thomas’ birth.
This is more than a brick wall, it’s a concrete wall! All ideas, suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance

Hello there!
You don't say if you searched on SP for Thomas Samson's birth? I've no credits at the moment, but a search for Sa*s* births between 1827 and 1831 throws up 16 on one page - it might be worth a look to see if any match up - if you've not already done that.
You've probably already got this lot from the IGI - apologies if you've already done that.

Hi Liz
thanks for replying. I did look on SP, checked for Sam*son* males, got 3 pages - none of the parents match.
I've also had a look on the IGI - nothing either.
I do have Thomas' death certificate. He died in Glasgow in 1912. According to the certificate, his dob would be 1831 in Kilmarnock.
What strikes me as very strange, is the fact that I can't find ANY of his siblings (I'm sure he must have had some). That's what's leading me to think he was not born in Scotland but went there when he was very small. Couldn't find his parents or him on the 1841 census either!!

Is there an outside possiblity that the name Samson could have been misheard and Sim(p)son?? and misrecorded. Might be worth checking in the areas where you think he might have been .....
Otherwise I'm stumped.

I've just been on the Kenny Monaghan Headstone site looking for someone else. In the list of headstones for Kilmarnock, there is a Thomas Samson. No other details. However if you write to the webmaster, he will send you a photo of the headstone, which may contain some useful information for you. Worth a try.

Hi Carmen - ...cousin ;-)
My brother notified me about your search. Peter Robertson Samson is my ggg grandfather! We live in Brisbane Australia. Peter's son, James migrated to Australia in mid 1850s and after a while dropped the last name, so the family became Robertson. We were aware of Thomas, but unable to find out anything about him.
Great to hear about you!
Regards,
Geoff (Robertson)
