I am wondering if it is possible to search the 1901 Scotland Census by street name, so that you can see the residents of a specific street.
I am missing Patrick FLAHERTY married to Mary FLAHERTY (DOB 1872)
and their children Margaret, Mary, George and Catherine. They have lived on Manor Street, Falkirk for sevral births and deaths, but I cannot find them on the 1901 census.
So, a street seach might turn up a misspelled name.
Thanks
Jay
1901 Census possibility of searching by street name? .....

I'm afraid not.
There are street indexes for the various censuses in book form. These cover most urban areas for 1901, with the coverage decreasing back to 1841 when it's only the cities of Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and Aberdeen which are covered.
The structure of these indexes is that the ED number is given for a street, - especially for long streets, the set of numbers contained in an ED are listed.
There was an index on test with the SP User Group some time ago for either 1901 or 1891, - can't recall which, - but it never made it on to the live site, - GROS were concerned over certain aspects. It may be the case that this and other street indexes will be added at some future date to ScotlandsPeople.
So, for the moment, it's back to microfilm readers and scrolling through a film until you find the street of interest, - but be careful
, even for relatively short streets it can be the case that it's split across 2 or more EDs, - a common situation is that one side of a street, say even numbers, is in one ED, while the other, with the odd numbers, is in a neighbouring ED.
And avoid getting hung up on numbers. Many streets were re-numbered as towns grew, so that, say, #25 in 1871 turns out to be #39 in 1891. Worse than that, especially in larger towns and cities, streets were renamed!

Hi Jay
Have you considered the possibility that they emigrated? Not knowing which direction you are searching in and this is not conclusive by any means but a search for the death of Mary in Scotland before 1955 yields no easy results. This when coupled with the absence from the 1901 census does create some wonder
k
Best wishes

Missing FLAHERTY family in 1901 census
"considered the possibility that they emigrated? "
Yes, I have consisdered that. However, their last child:
Catherine FLAHERTY was born 25 Mar 1900 in Falkirk
Patrick FLAHERTY was born 17 Jun 1902 in Falkirk
Anne Jane FLAHERTY was born on 22 Aug 1904 in Falkirk
Mary FLAHERTY born 21 Mar 1896 died in Falkirk died 26 May 1907.
This indicates that they were still in Falkirk during the 1901 census.
I had a thought in the middle of last night to check who their neighbours were in 1891 and then try to find them in 1901. Then I could see if my folks were their neighbours with a misspelled name.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thank you
Jay

Hi Jay
Well I would say you're very correct in that the odds of them not being in that area during census time was minimal. Hmmmmm......perhaps they are buried under some really obscure indexing....or perhaps they were skipped or perhaps they were between parishes traveling or goodness only knows. I've a few of my own that should be in a place and come up missing. Sadly it happens
I may continue to ponder this one for a bit though. You can be sure I'll be back if any real lightbulbs go off
Your idea of a street index search would be great if it were possible. You may have to resort to consulting the microfilm at a local LDS center and going line by line to make sure they aren't there.
Best wishes

FLAHERTY etc
I tried all of the spellings that you suggested combining them with all of the first names for the folks in Falkirk, but no luck.
I guess that I will have to give up and accept that they are not there.
If anyone is checking the 1901 census for Falkirk and comes across Manor Street, please make a note of the folks living there for me.
You may find
Patrick FLAHERTY unknown but around 30-35 years
MARY FLAHERTY about 31 years
Margaret 7 years
Mary 5 years
George 3 years
Catherine about 1 year
Perhaps someone will think of another angle to locate this family.
I thought of looking at the 1891 census but Patrick and Mary weren't married yet, so I won't find them together.
Thanks for all of the suggestions.
