Can anyone point me a direction of where to start with checking ship lists for immigrants from Scotland to the US, by way of Canada or the US? I know my gggrandparent came from Scotland some time in the late 1830' and first appeared in the US census in Conn. in 1851.
We aren't sure from what port they would have leflt from though they were from the area around Dunndrennan in Kirkcudbright. Would Glasgow be the place to start? or someplace in England or over in Londonderry, Ireland?

Just to say that I had a few relatives from Kirkcudbrightshire who emigrated a bit later than yours, in the 1880s and 1890s, and I know they sailed from Dalbeattie to Liverpool and from there to New York and Canada.
