Hi Jack,
Thank you so much for your help, i appreciate it so much. I have only just found William's death on Scotlands people, but have been unable to find any reference to his birth or marriage in 1826 according to his death certificate. This is the first time I have had any scottish ancesters, and I am amazed at the information you get from a death certificate, my problem is it has not helped me as I have looked for Williams birth, marriage, also his parents, and his wife Jane's birth but so far I have drawn a blank. Thank you again for your quick reply.
Many thanks Barbara

Hi Barbara,
I'll presume for the moment that is your William & Jean / Jane? If so, then it may be worth looking at this 1855 BC - maybe you have?
The only reason i mention it is because it seems that William & Jean might have had a son Richard who possibly died not long before 1851 - Thomas was born abt 1849.
--
WILLIAM JAMIESON
JEAN MORAY
Marriage: 23 JUN 1826 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
RICHARD JAMIESON - Birth: 24 OCT 1855 High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: WILLIAM JAMIESON
Mother: JANE MURRAY
--
I know it could just be a coincidence on the names, but i do hope not.
Does Jane have MURRAY as her maiden surname on William's 1855 DC? Who were his parents?

Hi Jack, This is great news, Jane is on Williams death certificate as Murray, maybe this was why I could not find their marriage as the different spelling. William's Parents William Jamieson and Elizabeth Morrison.
I also have the death certificate for my Gt Grandfather James Jamieson born c1840 died in Glasgow 14th September 1883 age 42 years. Jane was also on that as Murray. James is registered as Labourer and Chelsea Pensioner, I expect that this means he was in the Army at sometime but do not know how I can find this out as I do not no anything re Scottish Regiments. I did not know until recently that he was born in Scotland as I could not find him on any English census, he married in Liverpool in 1879.
Richard must have been born after Williams death May 1855.
Many thanks Barbara.

Hi Barbara,
These 2 censuses are the only William "JAMIESON" families that are anywhere near for the years of 1841 & 1851. My own thoughts are that they are the one and same family, but no proof - though there isn't another family in Paisley that would suit over these 2 censuses.
James' age is as 5 in 1841 - i can only think this was meant to 5 months. If this is true, then there doesn't seem any problem, as Jane at 8yrs in 1841 fits Jean at 18yrs in 1851 - but just a pity more of the children aren't with the family in 1851.
You do say that your G-GF James was born c1840, and this is the only James born about then in the 1841 census that has parents William & Jane.
You'll need to look at the 1855 BC for Richard to see if he IS "yours". If yes, then it may help - one thing it should show is father William as deceased, and it will say how many children Jane has had - living & dead.
--
Name is as JAMESON in 1841 - no "i", and ALL are born Renfrewshire in 1841, and ALL born Paisley, Renfrewshire 1851.
The last 4 children in 1841 were at the top of the next page (10) - Richard had no occupation.

Hi Jack,
Thanks for this information, I agree with you that this seems to be the correct family on both census.
I took your advice and had a look at BC for Richard Jamieson 24/10/1855
Father William Jamieson DECEASED Mother Jane Murray. 4 boys and 4 girls living 3 deceased.
I have also spent an age studying Williams DC and with the help of a magnifying glass have come up with the following.
Robert born 1826 died 1829
William born 1829
Richard born 1831 died 1850
Jane born 1834
Elizabeth born 1838 died 1844
Jessie born 1836 died 1839
James born 1840
Jessie born 1835 died 1843
Sarah born 1845
Thomas born 1849
John born 1851
I can't thank you enough for the interest you have shown in my family.
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Simple answer is - i wish i knew! Maybe Alexander & Jean never got any of their children recorded until it was forced upon Jean in 1855 when Scottish Statutory records started.
--
The children recorded on William's 1855 DC have me a wee bit confused - not your fault as it sounds like it's difficult to read. There are 2 Jessies? one named when one was still living? It can happen, but not often. Are all the children in that order - and with those years?
--
On Richard's 1855 BC - does it say mother Jean's "12th" child? 4 boys living, 4 girls living? how many boys, and how many girls were deceased? I seem to make it -
5 boys living - 2 boys deceased (Robert, Richard).
2 girls living - 3 girls deceased (Eliz, Jessie 1, Jessie 2).
[although it all depends if registrar included Richard - if not then it's 4 boys living instead of 5]
--
The only William that anywhere near fits in Paisley 1851 is a 25yr old with a 28yr old Agnes (no children) in the Abbey, Paisley parish. Maybe he added a few years to be nearer Agnes? - but you might need to find his DC to prove it (even then it might not). And then William may not be in Paisley at all.
The only Paisley born William i can see in Scotland 1881 is a 41yr old in Inverness who married a Mary McTavish at Cromarty in 1872 - but childrens' names don't look very promising.
Sorry for all the questions - just trying to figure them out! Ta.

Hi Jack;
What a confusing lot this family have turned out to be.
This is exactly as it is written on Richard's birth certificate.
Jane Jamieson, maiden name Murray her 12th child 45 years Paisley.
4 boys and 4 girls living 3 boys deceased. It looks as if Richard is not included in that calculation.
On William's DC this is exactly what is written.
1) Robert death 3yrs 1829
2) William 26
3) Richard death 19yrs 1850
4) Jane 21
5) Jessie death 3 1/2 yrs 1839
6) Elizabeth death 6 1/2 yrs 1844
7) James 15
8) Jessie death 8 1/2 yrs 1843
9) Sarah 10
10) Thomas 6
11) John 4
I hope this makes it a little clearer for you.
Regards Barbara.
