ARE GHOSTS LISTED ON THE CENSUS?? .....

Post by alimail » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:40 pm

Hope someone can solve a strange problem for me!
In my search for a family member, John Lavery, I opened a page of the 1881 Census, which listed several members of the Lavery family. The Census Place was Abbey, Renfrew, and under the Road, Street Address etc heading, all family members were listed as "Dwelling:Ghost." Their names, ages, occupations etc are all listed as normal.
I'm totally puzzled as to what this means.....do I have a potential Spook as an ancestor, running around Renfrew Abbey?
There's no doubt a sensible explanation - can anyone help??
Many thanks, Alison

There are 14 1881 entries with "Ghost, Abbey, Paisley" in the address, but 6 refer to "Ghost Road", as with ...........

Dwelling: Ghost Road
Census Place: Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203566 GRO Ref Volume 559-3 EnumDist 13 Page 29
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Thomas LOWRIE M 25 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coal Miner
Kate LOWRIE M 23 F Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Occ: Cotton Mill Worker
Margaret PENMAN W 66 F Linwood, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Mother Law
Occ: House Wife
David LOWRIE 2 M Elderslie, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son

I suspect that the enumerator or the indexer missed the "Road" in the other 8 entries.

Thank Goodness for that! I wondered if I was having a Senior Moment when I read the entry.
I still can't find the right John Lavery....if anyone out there is looking at Laverys from Glasgow, I'd love to hear from you.

I have an Arthur Lavery who married Roseanne Glancy in Glasgow in 1857. The only two children I have are Sarah Ann b. 1858 and Catherine b. 1860, but I have not extensively researched this lot as they are a side branch. Mother Roseanne died in 1866 and by then they had moved to Edinburgh....but as you said you wanted to hear from Glasgow Lavery families, I thought I would mention it.

Nina
Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

Hello to Nina and Maureen on the other side of the world!!!!
My search for the elusive John Lavery is getting more interesting. On the IGL register he is listed as marrying a Margaret Morrow around 1868, which would have been bigamy as he was still married to my poor GGGranny, who died in Barnhill Poorhouse in 1872!
The IGL then lists 3 children born to John and Margaret, John b. 1874 New Zealand, Robert b.1877 The Gap, NSW, Australia, and William, b1879, also NSW.
Interestingly, both young John and Robert are listed as dying on the same day, 07 December, 1885.
If anyone could tell me how I might trace how and when John and Margaret travelled to NZ and Australia, and how I can get more information from the IGL site, I'd be really grateful. I don't quite understand how the site works (being a bit of a computer illiterate!)
