Does anybody know where/if it's possible to get a list or other information about shipmasters in Leith? I know there was the Fraternity of Masters and Mariners of Leith, but not if records exist. It's particularly 18th century I'm looking for.
Baptism records in two generations of my Leith ancestors have lots of shipmasters' names as witnesses. It would be interesting to know more - what were their ships...

Hi Jenny
Trinity House in Leith may have what you are lookng for. Also NAS hold many records and may have some information of interest. I have shipbuildiers and mariners from Leith in my tree. Also worth reading is Sue Mowat's book:
"The Port of Leith: its history and its people".
As to list of ships - a while back a maritime researcher who was based near Leith told me of the existence of lists of ships built in Leith which named the 20 owners of "shares" in each ship. I could have sworn he said they were at the Mitchell in Glasgow. I followed this up, but the Mitchell say they don't have such lists, not for Leith at any rate, I'm sure thay have lots of Clyde ship info. I've also contacted GUAS - they don't have them either. As far as I recall, I don't think NAS have them ..... but might need to go back and check notes on that one. I've tried getting back in touch to see if he could clarify where the heck these records are, but I've had no reply. Lost at sea....
All I know is they are/were out there somewhere! If anyone knows where I can find them I'd be very glad to hear about it!
However, I digress, as thats not quite what you are looking for anyway!
Here is Trinity House (its well worth a visit!)

Reactivating this in case there are people now joined who have information about Leith. I haven't managed to get north, alas, but Trinity House is on my list... (along with the million other things to check out)!
In particular, I'm looking for info on Thomas Philp, shipmaster around 1775, and other shipmasters of his time. Also I'm looking for information on the various crafts associated with shipping. Later I have James Philp, ship carpenter in the early 19th c. and his sons James and John Philip, ship carpenters, who both eventually left Leith for Greenock.

If you haven't already done so have a good trawl through Hugh Stevely's Marine Data thread, - see http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2457 .
And I'm sure that Hugh would welcome direct contact as well.
Otherwise a richt guid Google is recommended is you haven't already done so.

Hi Jenny,
I have a Jean Philp (born circa 1770) who married James Dow on 25 Sep 1791 in South Leith, Midlothian. Jeans father was called Peter Philp.
Eventually the Dow families moved to Port Glasgow / Greenock area, and also long history of ships captains.
Can you connect with the surname Dow?
Jean Philp and James Dow's children had Bell and Seton amongst their middle names, but I ont know if that was from the paternal or maternal side, as this is the furthest back I have got.
regards Gillian

Hi Gillian,
I'm still working out the Philps/Philips... I have a Jean Philp b. 1777, daughter of John Philp, tailor in Leith, and Marion Cunningham. I'd assume your Jean Philp is not the same one but may be related - there was a family of Philps in Leith going back at least 2 generations, but possibly others who'd come from Fife.
Do you have any more info about her family, any other names?
The Bell name comes in from Queensferry in the next generation - Mary Bell, daughter of Alexander Bell, wright, married James Philip, son of John Philp.
The Greenock area connection is interesting - I'd love to know more about the extent of the move of shipping to the Clyde.
