G'day Listers,
Please forgive me if what I am about to do is the wrong thing. I am hoping that I may locate someone with an interest in the names of CAMPBELL and TELFORD believed to have originated from the Glasgow area.
ALSO please is there someone on the list who has access to the 1901 census who could do a lookup for me please for the following;
John CAMPBELL and his wife Janet nee TELFORD. Year of birth not known. It is believed that they may have the following children; Nessie c.1897, Violet c.1899 and Jenny c.1895
Any and all assistance for this boy from an upside down country will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Colonial boy
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
If you can give us some names for your Campbells & Tellfords and some dates, we may be able to help, otherwise it's a bit like that old needle in haystack routine!
The 1901 census for Scotland can be found at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - it is a pay-per-view site, and unfortunately we are all in the same boat with that one!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Colonial Boy,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
The decennial censuses of 1841 to 1901 of Scotland are available online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (link above) on a pay per view basis. 1881 is transcriptions at this stage, the others you get to view the original census enumeration pages.
From the information you give, I would suggest that you look for Violet first. Assuming she did not die young and was around fir the 1901 census. My reasons for choosing her are she is young, the age on the census should be accurate (±1 or 2 years), Violet was less commonly used than the other names and Violet is less likely to be shortened to some other form of the name. These reasons should make the search fairly easy for her.
On using the free search, there were 24 Violet Campbells listed in the 1901 census. Restrict the age to 0 to 3 years, and it is narrowed down to 2 results. Restrict the results to Lanarkshire - both of these results remain. You would need to look at these two results and hopefullyfind one of them to be the one you are seeking.
Then you can seek her birth certificate on the same site. The place of birth given on the census should be right, but not to be guaranteed as fact. From that birth certificate, you will have the parents' marriage date and place. Youi should be able to find their parents all listed their, mothers' maiden names included to allow you to go back another generation. All going well you can get back on that trail for another generation or two befor the searching gets tougher.
As for Violet's sisters, their births may have been registered as Agnes and Jennifer, or someother variations.
All the best,
AndrewP

G'day Lesley,
Thank you lass for taking the time replying to my listing.
Sadly the only information I have is what I submitted when I first wrote;
John CAMPBELL and his wife Janet nee TELFORD. Year of birth not known. Year of marriage unknown. It is believed that they may have the following children; Nessie c.1897, Violet c.1899 and Jenny c.1895. After 1901 it is known that John and Janet did have three more children and they were Margaret, John and Kitty.
Being a useless Colonial I am afraid I do not know the years of their birth. The only other information that I can be reasonably sure of is that they came from Glasgow.
I understand what you have said in relation to access to information at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, unfortunately we are all in the same boat with that one!
Many thanks once again.
Kind regards

G'day Andrew,
Thanks also for your reply which is very much appreciated.
What I haven't mentioned is that all the children came to Australia in the 1930s. They had been accompanied by their mother who made a decision to return to Scotland apparently but after leaving Sydney sadly died en-route to Scotland at Adelaide, South Australia.
Regards to all

Sorry Andrew but being a recycled teenager who suffers from the dreaded YD Syndrome (Youth Deficiency) I apparently was ignorant in what was transpiring.
Thank you mate for extra information and guidance that you have given.
Kind regards mate.
