Robert Brown .....

Post by David Lang » Sun Sep 24, 2006 10:46 am

I am trying to trace my grandmothers half brother Robert Brown who emigrated to Australia after WW1.

Robert was born between 1901 and 1903 probably in Glasgoe but could be Clydebank or Kilmarnock!!!

His father is Archibald Brown and is mother Elizabeth Boyle(dec 1903) does anyone know where to start looking for him ?

Hi David
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D
You can find births up to 1905 at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
If is a pay per view site. To search costs nothing, but to see the results of a search you will need to pay. If the birth is there you can download a digital copy of the original birth entry.

However, with a surname Brown, there are a lot to chose from - 69 in Lanark(shire) from 1901-03!

I think if it were me I'd maybe go looking for the death of Elizabeth Boyle first, hoping she maybe died at home and that would give me a precise district and so cut down the numbers for the births by quite a bit.
There are three I can see in the correct time frame (with a slight margin for error) with surname Boyle/Brown
1 1900 BOYLE ELIZABETH BROWN F 23 PAISLEY /RENFREW 573/01 0842
2 1904 BOYLE ELIZABETH BROWN F 34 KILMARNOCK /AYR 597/00 0304
3 1906 BOYLE ELIZABETH BROWN F 38 PAISLEY /RENFREW 573/01 0865

The 1904 looks the most likely to me, going on the information you have given. It could well be she died late 1903 and the death was not registered till 1904.

Based on the above, if it is the correct one, there is one Robert Brown born in Kilmarnock in 1903.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

She is the 1904 one , i have her death certificate and also the marriage certificate and the 1901 census.

The problem is that they were married in Partick, in Clydebank in 1901 childless, and died in Kilmarnock in 1904 (looks to be her parents address) and when Archibald remarried it was again in Partick where he and his siblings settled after their parents deaths.

I have spent a few £s on SP to try and find it and thought why not try Australia get a rough death date and any info from there and work back !!

Cheers

David

Hi David
So, have you also checked the Robert Brown born in Kilmarnock in 1903, and know that he is not the one you are looking for?

Without knowing more, I'd suspect the cause of death in 1903/4 could be child birth related, and it does not seem odd to me for someone to go to their parents' house to give birth.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello David

Not sure this is the Robert Brown but your couple did have a Robert Moderate Brown in 1899 in Kilmarnock. Whether he died and they had another I'm not sure.....

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks Jean

Will look into it on SP think that one may have died in childhood as on the 1901 census they have no children , unless he is living with grand parents ( which in my family seems to be a common occurance!!!)

Moderate ! what a bizzare middle name , then again i have another ancestor with the middle name Motion

Cheers

Hello David

Hope he's the right one! Please let us know how you get on with it. Fingers crossed here :D And yes....it is an interesting middle name as is Motion. If it is him and he used the name throughout life it surely could be a huge help in picking him out of the hordes of Robert Browns :D !

Best wishes
Jean

Well I have him born in Kilmarnock in 1899 but registered in both Kilmarnock and Old Kilpatrick ( CLydebank). The middle name is Moderate!!!

I have also found him on the 1901 Census Living with his Grand Parents in Kilmarnock.

I think this must be him as i ahve checked most of the Kilmarnock/Clydebank/Glasgow Robert Brown Births post 1901.

Now all i need is to find his death record in Australia and when he emigrated
