Bookbinders

Post by scooter » Thu Sep 28, 2006 3:29 pm

Hi All,

Outwith post office directories, if someone were employed as a bookbinder and/or a silk weaver in Glasgow (possibly Barony) between 1815-ish and 1826 where also might I find reference to them?

Any ideas welcome!

Best,

Hi Scott:

Might they be listed in a tradesman's guild book? The bookbinder might also be listed in with a book publishing house.

A silk maker might be listed with local artisans, textile artists, weavers.

Hi Frances,

Thanks for that. I think I might send a wee message to the Mitchell to ask what they might have in their archives.

Very best,

Thanks Mary, I believe I may have seen that site before, but didn't find anything concrete. All I can assume is that my bookbinder worked for one of those companies listed. It could be James Cameron as there is a James Cameron listed as a witness on the baptism of John Wishart's daughter Margaret in 1819, but I'm rather clutching at straws!

CAMERON, James bookbinder Glasgow
2 Prince's Street 1818-19
158 Trongate 1820
Glas Dir; Pigot 1820

Best wishes,
