1851 census index - most likely Barony .....

Post by Jang » Fri Oct 06, 2006 6:20 am

Does anyone have the 1851 census index for Barony? I'm looking for my gggg grandparents John and Mary McWatt both born ca 1791 (according to the 1841 census) in Ireland and thought they might be living with their youngest daughter, Jane McFerran McWatt born 1833 Ireland.

The family were living in Tibbermuir Perthshire in 1841. I checked the index on ScotlandsPeople and think I found all three of them, and possibly brother James (b. ca 1825 Ireland) in the online index - I was hoping someone had the index on CD to check for me please. I especially want to know the parents' ages.

Many thanks
Jan

Hi Jan

Welcome to TalkingScot.

The expenditure of 6 credits (or 5 if you've already done the search :!: ) on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk will take you to the image of the 1851 census entry in the original enumeration book in a couple of minutes, and let you see the ages. Everything matches except John is not shown as born in Ireland.

Unfortunately, neither of them appears to be there for 1861 census, so there may or may not be 1855 or later death register entries.......

1851 census index - most likely Barony

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. My Cooks and McWatts did turn out to be the Irish family after all, from Carnmoney in Antrim :-)

I don't have a credit card so I found them in the index using a process of elimination :-) I was hoping someone might have access to the CD index to confirm their ages.

I think John and Mary are my Margaret McWatt's parents. In 1841 they were 50 years old, only just old enough to be Margaret's parents, if she was born about 1806.

Thanks for pointing out John was not born Ireland. I just rechecked the 1841 entry - it says John born Scotland not Perthshire. I don't know how I managed to overlook that!

I also checked the ScotlandsPeople index for Mary (nee Moore)'s death - not there so she did die pre 1855.

Regards
Jan

Hi Jan,
I'm sure David won't mind me mentioning the ages; the family were in Anderston, Barony 1851.
No more details as they were taken from name indexes.
--
John McWATT, 64
Mary McWATT, 60
Jane McWATT, 18
--
Jack
ps, also in Anderston 1851 is a;
James McWATT, 27
Esther 26, Mary 4, Esther 2, Malcolm abt 1.
(1861 census says James and his family are all as born Barony Glasgow;
so not your James if this birthplace is correct)
--
pps, but another in Anderston 1851 is a;
George McWATT, 33
Isabella 29, John 7, Robert 6, Elizabeth abt 1 & George also abt 1.
(1861 census says George is born Ireland, Isabella in England,
and the two oldest children were born Tibbermuir)

Hi Jack,

Fantastic! The fact that John McWatt was born ca 1787 makes it even more likely that he's the father of my Margaret McWatt born ca 1806, and not her elder brother. :-)

George is another of John and Mary's children - great to have his family

I know who the other James belongs to - I think the families might all connect up further back.

Many thanks

John Stevenson AGE 68

Post by Wanda Stevenson » Sun Oct 22, 2006 11:58 pm

Have found the 1841 census records for John and his wife Jane on Clyde St, Glasgow ages were 58 (Jane 59) Now am looking for 1851 census records for them. Can't find d.c. so have no idea when they died. John was a Labourer in 1841, and they had 4 children of their own living with them as well as two other kids I can't explain a John Campbell age 4 and a Margaret McMillian age 1.
Many thanks
