The Kaisers Gold Watch
Hi There,I am trying to get as much information that i can on an incident concerning my late Grandfather. The problem i may have is the scant knowledge my mum has of what actually happened. It seems my Grandfather Robert Kay Sutherland 1889-1940 was involved in the rescue of some German sailors in Granton or Leith harbour. The date around 1910.Robert was awarded an inscribed gold watch from Kaiser Willhelm ||.What was the incident? As bad luck would have it he put the watch into the jewellers (i think for a while). My mum remembers he gave the ticket for the watch to a "friend" of his,it was never seen again! I hope somebody on TS has some knowledge of the rescue or where i might find information on same.David

Hi David,
The rescue's in the Scotsman for Mon 3 January 1910 on page 5 (I've got a sub to their online archive). To summarise: It was a German schooner anchored off Leith harbour, the captain and 2 sailors were returning to the ship when their boat capsized. One sailor drowned but your grandfather, another sailor and a policeman managed to rescue the captain and the other sailor. The second sailor died on the way to hospital.
On a quick look, I can't find anything about an award for the rescue.

I wish I could remember what I searched on now! It was something like "Sutherland rescue german harbour" without the dits and searching on all words. It's a pity the site doesn't remember your previous searches so we could learn the best strategies. I know someone else posted a list of tips for the Scotsman archive some time back but I can't remember who or when - possibly a candidate for a "sticky"?

Hi Lesley
Skiving off from doing some proper work I went looking for the Scotsman search tips. They're here:
viewtopic.php?t=2360
and it was Grannysrock who posted them last November when the Scotsman was doing a freebie. I wonder if we'll get another one this year as they were doing half-price subs then as well
All the best

Every year so far they've done a 24 hr freebie on St. Andrew's Day, and shame on anyone who doesn't know the date.setait wrote:Hi Lesley
