MIs Glass - Duncans

Post by iangmacdonald » Sun Nov 05, 2006 12:27 pm

Where did the people of the south parts of Glass get buried? Are there published or recorded MIs for that area.

I'm particularly looking for John Duncan born at Bellcherrie, Cabrach in 1785 but who then had children at Hillockhead, Glass around 1805-1809 with his wife Elspet Moir. I know little about Elspet other than she and John were married in 1804 at Cabrach.

They appear to have died or left the area before the 1841 census.

Ian,

You might find this site useful in your search - it lists the MI's for Upper Cabrach Church.
http://www.threestones.co.uk/memorials/index.html

As far as I know, there are no MI's for Glass yet or for Walla Kirk (another kirkyard in the vicinity) If your family moved, you could try searching the Moray Archives at http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp for your family. There is a Cemetery Explorer there.

I have lots of family from Glass, and these include Duncan's...my 4xGreat Granny was Jean Duncan ch 1762, her parents being John Duncan and Ann Stronach.

Thanks. I had found the threestones site recently - superb.

I'd looked earlier at the Cabrach MIs from the A&NES site. Stone 29 are my lot. Isabella Duncan was the wife of Charles McDonald, gamekeeper at Largue. Isabella died a bit later, uncommemorated, in 1894 at Dykeside while living with her grand-daughter Ann (stone 99). Sadly these Glass Duncans don't put in an appearance despite their links to Cabrach - a bunch seem to hover around the parish borders.

Now, do you know any more about other of the John Duncan/Ann Stronach children? They had a son John in 1752 who would have been a reasonable age to be the one who married Isabell Murray in 1779 (no other John comes up as a Duncan birth in Glass in that period). John and Isabell after having a first child James at Glass then had Alexander and John at Bellcherrie, Cabrach. That John then marries Elspet Moir in my hoped for scheme of things.

I did a search a couple of weeks ago, in a fit of optimism, on all Duncan births 1553-1820 for Glass and for Cabrach (19 and 22 respectively) to see if things fitted together in any obvious way. Interesting but not greatly illuminating.

If you have any interest in Mitchells from Old Deer, check out the conversation I've been having in the "Ministers in Clola and Balfron" topic in General Discussion.

Hi Mitchell
Thanks for the link to MI's for Upper & Lower Cabrach Church - good information there. I've added it to the list we have at:

Ian,

I haven't delved further yet with the Duncans as I've been concentrating on the Archibalds so this is what I have so far from the IGI and with help from a fellow Archibald researcher.

I have siblings of Jean Duncan (all Glass) as...
Janet ch23/3/1750, she married John Archibald - son of William Archibald and Elizabeth Robson.
John ch 26/6/1752
Alexander ch 25/2/1755
William ch 1/7/1758
Ann ch 11/2/1764

Jean ch 8/9/1762 married William Archibald - son of Adam Archibald and Betsy Robson. Sorry that I can't help with any more info on John b 1752.

My Mitchell's came from Forgue, Glass and probably Drumblade but I'll check out the conversation anyway :)
