Just found out from another forum that ancestry.co.uk are giving free access to passenger lists until 30th November... Ellis Island and other parts of America.
I've found my family who emigrated in 1868...I had the info on them already but hadn't actually seen the list.

Hi David,
If you go to the homepage and click on immigration records, then do a search, it will allow access to the records available.

Sorry, should have posted the link...the easiest way to get it is on the ancestry.com page.
When you type in http://www.ancestry.com/ it comes straight on

As I'd begun to suspect it's the passenger lists at the US end, not anything that was left by departing ships in the UK, - at least one article that I read y'day gave the distinct impression that it was the former, and, forbye, in a Scottish context "Glasgow" passenger lists, which I, and I'm sure many read as passenger list info in Glasgow, as opposed to passenger lists in the USA showing port of origin as Glasgow, - bit of a difference !!
I'm unclear about what more Ancestry can offer for New York than is already freely available at the Ellis Island site - http://www.ellisisland.org/ , - see also a recent post here about Stephen Morse's various sites that offer better, more sophisticated search possibilites than the Ellis Island site itself. (Actually that's probably unfair, - I don't think that the Ellis Island site has info from the previous Castle Garden site, used before the opening of Ellis Island.)
I'd have to do some digging, but I suspect that some at least of the Boston, Philadelphia, SF, N Orleans, and Baltimore info is also available eleswhere.

I think the New York records go a bit later at Ancestry, as I found my people on ships in 1927, but cannot find them at Ellis Island site.
Having said that, I thought I would have another look around today, but I can't seem to search...I keep getting a little box up saying that the page contains no data!

I accessed these records yesterday morning without any problem from Ancestry.co.uk.
Records are for both earlier and later than Ellis Island website.
Would be pleased if you could let me know how to access Boston lists by other means.
Having spent last weekend accessing free Ancestry some of these records were not availble at that time.

No problem!
From Ancestry.co.uk select Search from Bar at Top of page then Immigration/Emigration from Box down right-hand side of page. This brings up the Search Immigration Records Page with the Passenger lists included shown at the side.
Hope this helps

Thanks for that !!
Maybe due to massive demands on the site following all the newspaper coverage, but that table on the right wasn't appearing at all when I tried previously clicking on the "Search" tab ..........
