Hi Every Body
Does any one know if and where I could find informayion about accidents on the railways in Scotland.
My Grandfather was a Private in the 2nd Batt. Black Watch. In 1903 he married his first wife, in Dundee. Later on in the year he had a daughter also born Dundee, the birth cert. states that William was at The Castle, Edinburgh. This wife died in 1904 and her Mother was present so I am assuming William is still in Edinburgh.
In 1908 he marries for the second time again in Dundee But he is now out of the army and is a dye work labourer, He is 26 yrs old, and living in Dundee.
Family rumour is that he lost both legs in a railway accident, and, being able to limit him to either Edinburgh or Dundee, is there anywhere that will have information on accidents.
His second wife died in 1914 and he ended up in Glasgow where he married my Grandmother in 1918. By all accounts he had already lost his legs by then.
Any help will be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.
Anne.

There will probably be a newspaper report along the lines of "Man terribly injured in railway accident" but you'll need a reasonably close date in order to locate such a report, unless you're fortunate and there's something in The Scotsman on-line index (subscription basis access, down to a 24 hr period, alhough I believe that it may be possible to pay to view a single item.)

Hi David and thank you for your reply. I will look at the Scotsman online and see what I can find.

If the accident happened in Dundee, it will likely have been carried in the local Perth newspapers, which is just down the road from Dundee. As the A. K. Bell Library in Perth has a brilliant name index for their newspapers, it might be worth giving them a call and asking if they could do a quick look up for you for your grandfather's name. If they can narrow down the date, you could then check other papers for the same event, as different papers will often have different levels of detail.
The library is extremely helpful, and can be contacted at (01738) 444949.

Hi Chris and thank you. That is one avenue I didnt think off. I have contacted Scotsman online and they have told me some dates that may be relevant concerning the only double amputee in Dundee. I am also waiting for a reply from a link with Dundee that they have given me. I will certainly give the A.K. Bell a call. They were really helpful when I was in Perth last year.
Regards
Anne.

I have a connection to a railway accident myself - my father was the guard on the Great Western train which was crashed into at Ladbroke Grove/Paddington in 1999. He fortunately survived, and I am still collecting material on it, so I hope you can get as much coverage for your Dundee incident!
NB: The papers in Perth would be the Constitution, the Advertiser and the Journal.
Good luck!
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thank you again, having the name of the papers may prove even more useful. Good luck in your searching.
