Marine Sources – Greenock
My wife's gggg grandfather was Robert Bridgeford.
He was Captain of a trading ship that ran from Greenock to New York until about 1795.
According to several written accounts, in or about 1795, after one trip he arrived safely in New York harbour and went to the bank to deposit the Warehouse receipts and take out money for the sailors' wages. He never made it home that night. According to the accounts, his body was found at the foot of Broadway, robbed and murdered. We don't have any idea of the name of the ship as it is never mentioned.
Does anyone know of any sources that would list the ships and the Captains of same, that would have sailed from Greenock from about 1785 to 1795?
(Admin Note - "Greenoch" changed to "Greenock")

"you might be able to get some info from the Greenock Advertiser i have a report 1841 in the Greenock Advertiser"
Unfortunately, The Greenock Advertiser launched only in 1802 (the Ayr Advertiser started in 1803)
Unfortunately we don't know the name of the ship. We have to go to the main library where we hope they have a subscription to the the London Times, we don't feel very confident of finding anything. Unlike the Sailing Ship India and the controversy over that ship, unless something outstanding or unusual occurs, we doubt if Robert Bridgeford (also sometimes written Bridgford) and his ship would appear in something as far away as London.
You made reference to "Seafaring Marine Data". We did a google and couldn't find anything for "seafaring marine data".
Probably the greatest source of merchant ship data is Lloyd’s Register. One of the world’s oldest insurance underwriters, Lloyd’s have published the particulars of both British and foreign ships, their builders, owners and masters, years of manufacture and ports of registry, on an annual basis since 1764. What we don't know as at this writing, is if Lloyd's registers are digitally indexed or available online. That will be our next check after finishing this post.
Thanks for your interests and attention.
