Boer War 1899-1902 ....

Post by meelymunch » Tue Dec 12, 2006 11:43 pm

Hi, My G Grandfather was English but i just wanted to know if anyone could enlighten me.
I know my g grandad fought in the Boa War but i am not sure when he entered into the war. What i wanted to ask is what happened if he was away for the English 1901 Census.... was that it , he got missed out ? Were soldiers who were out of the country not accounted for?

Cheers , Carole.

Hi Carole
If someone was not at home they could not be enumerated. So, you are right in thinking that if your grandfather was fighting in the Boer War in 1901 and was not at home because of this, he would not be mentioned on the census return.

Best wishes

Hi Carole
But I'd think there must be some records of those who fought in the Boer War(s)? I've not ever had occasion to look it up, but suspect TNA at Kew would be where they are likely held, if they exist. A bit of digging about required!!

Best wishes
