1901 Census .....

Post by nelmit » Sun Dec 31, 2006 1:23 pm

I need help finding William John Nevitt in 1901. He was 19 when he married Margaret Henderson in 1900 at Dennistoun and his daughter Jessie was born in Glasgow in 1906.

I entered N*v*t (no first name) as a search on SP. There are only 20 entries - none in Glasgow. :? :?

I can't find his parents William (a spirit salesman) and Margaret either.

Anybody have any ideas?

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette,

this problem may be related to the one in Statutory Records > ScotlandsPeople New Year's data available, see viewtopic.php?t=7381&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 .

This is likely to be fixed by the 12th of January, so I would suggest trying again then.

Regards,

John

Hi Annette,
Any chance William was a milk salesman?
There is a 20yr old of that occupation with wife Maggie 18yrs at Maryhill.
But the surname is as NUTT.
Clutching at straws!

Hello Jack,

I was going to resurrect this post when I saw your reply.

I'm sorry but I wasn't automatically told there was a response.

Thanks for having a look and that actually sounds not bad because I can only think the surname has been wrongly written/indexed - it seems to be very unusual. Margaret should be the same age as William ie 20. William was an iron drilling machinist when they married in July 1900 and they were both aged 19.

Actually I think I might have a wee look on SP anyway.

Thanks again Jack, I'll let you know of any outcome.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,

William the milk salesman doesn't look too promising - your William being an iron driller.
Maybe just have a wee peek next time you're at The Mitchell?
The no. for Wiliam [20] & Maggie [18] Nutt is - 1901. 622-1. Ed 34 pg 2 (Maryhill)

What other children might be with the parents William Nevitt & Margaret ? in 1901?
Names, ages etc. in 1891?

Hello Jack,

I had a wee look anyway and I don't think it is them.

I started this as a quickie at the end of a day at Park Circus.
Jessie (who I've just noticed was a twin) is my friend's ancestor.

Jessie's grandparents were William John Nevitt, Spirit Salesman and Margaret O'Neill (I'm afraid that's all I have on them) so I was thinking maybe Irish and wanted to confirm that by seeing William Junior (b about 1881) on the 1901 census. I would guess that these are the children of William and Margaret Henderson up to 1906 and would think, going by the dates, they should be in Glasgow in 1901.

1 1901 NEVITT CATHERINE MACN F ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 1787
2 1905 NEVITT JESSIE MCN HEND F ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 1261
3 1903 NEVITT JOHN HENDERSON M ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 1209
4 1900 NEVITT MARGARET F DENNISTOUN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 2595
5 1905 NEVITT ROSANNA F ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 1260

I'll investigate further when I go to Park Circus in ............April!!!
Perhaps they've been missed in 1901.

Thanks for looking.

Kind regards,
Annette M

PS Do you remember a Police Record book upstairs at The Mitchell on the table with the Census street indexes? :?

Hi Annette

I could not find William John Snr nor Jnr on the 1901 census either but baby Margaret was born on 16/10/1900 at 298 Castle Street, Dennistoun, baby Catherine was born on on 3/11/1901 at 184 Parliamentary Road, St Rollox and in this instance daddy has signed the birth registration whereas with Margaret it was mummy who signed. I'll assume you have the DC's for him and Margaret - if not - give me a shout.

Happy hunting

Regards

Annette R
