Would the Coast Guard in the 1840-1860's have been a British or Scottish institution? I am after information on John McConnachy who was a member of the Coast Guard in the Aberdeen are in this timeframe.

British.

It derived, - may still have been at that era, - can't recall the historical details, - from an organisation set up by The Royal Navy.

One of the current, or maybe Dec issues of one of the UK genmags has a good article on the records.
