Several greats grandfather married in 1785, in Rispond at that time he was a boatman, when his son Donald was born in (Lochsuian), is that a place? in 1801 he is recorded as being a Tenant Fisher Helper, is that a crewman on a boat??

Hi Wini,

Rispond? What parish was that in? (I am assuming that you have found this name in an OPR)

I don't recognise the name Lochsuian. It is probably an anglicisation of a Gaelic place name. Same question - what parish was this in?

Sounds like he helped on a fishing boat, and lived in a rented house.

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Wini & Andrew
I did a google earlier 'cos I'd also no idea where Rispond was and came up with Durness area, and Rispond Estate, Durness, By Lairg, Sutherland
Does that sound like the correct area Wini?

Best wishes

Lesley and Andrew,

You are quite correct this branch of the family are from Sutherland.
I just assume that you folks know everything you are such a font of knowledge.
The place names I have are
Durness
Eddrachillis
Rispond
Badcaband
Portichamic
Lochsuian
All from 1785 through the 19th Century
A cousin got the information from the Gunn Museum and SP has a lot in OPR's.
I'll be able to look at the images now.

Is there a map online of this area?
I have a map of Durness and Laid

Hi Wini
I'm sure Andrew will come up with a better idea, but try www.old-maps.co.uk for placename Durness and just have a look around the area. The places may just be small farms or steadings. Boatman/tenant fisher suggests costal places.
Also try http://www.originsnetwork.com/ScotsOrig ... earch.aspx
Where you can put in parts of placenames, having used the drop down list to resrict the search to Sutherland.

Putting in Edd* brought up EDDRACHILLIS, EDDRACHILLIS Sutherland RD code: 49/ so it appears to be a real place name, just as you had listed - you learn something new everyday on here!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Wini, Loch Suian - Loch Sween, but it´s a long way south unfortunately, in the Sound of Jura, which probably helps not a lot.

Good Hunting,

Thanks Lesley
will have a look at these

Thrall,
I will have a look at Loch Suian again, it seems a little unlikley doesn't it?
I am talking around 1800 or so and all other records are Sutherland

A wildcard search in the 1881 census CD doesn't produce anything close, which would tend to reinforce the idea that the spelling is phonetic.

There is a Lochsunart or -sanart, but that's in Argyll.
