Census 1800 ? .....

Was there a Census in Scotland during the year 1800?

If so, where could I go or who could I contact for a search of William and Margaret Baillie, with children Alexander and possibly new baby Daniel born in 1800 depending on what month the census was taken would depend on if he was reported as child also?

Hi Dave

Sadly there are no early census records in Scotland. The earliest complete one of any benefit for family history research is the 1841. There are a few fragments of earlier ones that exist (see old thread on TS here: http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... nsus#30576 ) but you will find nothing from 1800.

Thanks Jean. I am very new to all of this. Any suggestions on where to research marriage records between 1700-1800 for a William and Margaret Baillie somewhere in the vast area of the Highlands? Or birth records for Alexander 1799 and Daniel 1800?

Unfortunately, that is all I know besides Margaret being born 1769.

William had two brothers; George born 1771 and John unknown birth.

It is unknown why William did not come to America when the rest of the family; Margaret, Alexander, Daniel, George and John did.

I just spoke with Border's Books. It's not available yet in the U.S. but it will be in March of 2007. I already have one ordered with my name on it as soon as it comes in.

This sounds like a great reference and something exactly like what I need. I am very novice with all of this research and this book sounds like it would be a great guide.

Order it from Amazon UK, and it will be with you well before March '07, and at a P&P cost well in line with the cost had you waited until it's available in the USofA..........
