Census Mystery - Help! .....

Post by G.Love » Fri Feb 02, 2007 3:01 pm

Can anyone help me - I am mystified.

Last year I found my grandparents on the 1901 census and I made notes of there whereabouts and who was living with them in my notebook.

Today I went back to Scotland's People just to check something - and they've completely disappeared from the census. I've tried all sorts of permuations but just cannot understand where they have gone.

The details are: William McColl aged 30, wife Jane aged 28, living at East Crawford Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire. Why can't I find this census record anymore?
seeking McColl from Donegal and Greenock, McKay from Antrim and Greenock;
Whiteford from Ballycastle and Greenock; Tucker from Port Glasgow, and McGinty.

Nope! That's not them. Jane (or Jean) is 28 and they are living with son William aged 6 and daughter Mary aged 11 months.
Thanks for trying though.

Hello,

I don't have enough credits to check but there is a 28 year old Jane Mc*ll female and a 30 year old William Mc*ll at Greenock in 1901.

Hopefully this is them.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Yes Annette, that's them. So how come it's not coming up for me when I check?

I entered mccoll/mccall/mcoll/mcall as the the surname but then I just tried mc*ll (one c) and that gave a hit with both ages and first names. I haven't a clue what the surname is indexed as so it may not be them but it's definitely worth a look.

Fingers crossed.

I see what's happened. I was searching on 'McColl' which is what their name was, but Scotlands People are reading the cenus return as 'McCall'.

Here is a sharper copy of the same portion of census page.

I read them as William, Jeanie, William and Mary McColl. To judge the surname, you need to see the whole page to allow comparison to the enumerator's handwriting in other entries. See the other thread with the poll on this matter.

All the best,
