hi looking thru various census downloads i am finding that when i look at the old maps that the census officer has went over the parish boundary done a census record in another parish and put it down as the first parish
example thomas geddes 1841 census meikle cocklick parish of urr but this address is in the parish of kirkgunzeon.an example of bad local knowledge or was the officer paid per household and decided to earn a bit more?
its a bl**dy nuisance peering at old maps and then finding your in the wrong parish.NOT BEEN A GOOD DAY SCOTLAND LOSING AND FRANCE WINNING my local pub said they would give me a pint for every point diff if scotland won did she know something i didnt shes irish
cheers derek

Yeh it was a bad day for Scotland at the rugby. Terrible
Some of the wee maps are handy, although I have only come across the 1851 Census map for Inveresk.
Do many other parishes have such maps?

I have viewed many census microfilms and the one for Enumeration District 7 of Inveresk in 1851 is unique in having that map included. If you look closely at it you can see where the enumerator has arrow-marked his route round the district, with the schedule number noted at each street corner.

I uploaded that one to the TS Gallery some time back in connection with post

I have never seen if that page made it on to the SP site with the free header information for that district.
All the best,
AndrewP

Did you have a look at the free header pages for that census enumeration district and see if it was mentioned in the description of the district that he was supposed to cover.
All the best,

Re Census
Hi Andrew,
That wonderful bit of work always amazes me!
Could this be the enumerator J. Purves in the same year?
He's with his English born wife Frances.

1851 census 689 Ed M7 p 16 (Inveresk)
Bridge Street.
James PURVES, 42, Teacher, Free Church School, b Earlston, BEW

His address, Bridge Street, runs N / S near the centre of the drawing.
Jack
ps, Derek, i'll need to leave the free header question to one who knows the answer!

Yup, Andrew, that was the one I was meaning. I am sure I recognise the name Purves from somewhere though.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
The Free Header can be accessed from a button that says "View free header".
It is the small page at the front of the census for that area. In it it contains small notes made by the enumerator during the census. It can contain useful information but sometimes no more than a basic description of the parish/enumaration district.
An example from the Family Tree Detective shows a very detailed note for St Martins Parish, Perthshire in 1841 (I have cut it short as I am not sure about typing the text on the web):
"There is a decrease of 64 from the census of 1831......"
"No. of parishnors absent on 7th June - 3: visitors in parish - 3: only one has removed to Buenos Ayres during the last six months"
