Hello,
I've donwloaded the following image http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1034 from the 1851 census. The index says that this is a Wishart family (near the bottom of the page headed by William) however I'm not so sure.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi Scott.
Every time you think you have seen the worst handwriting possible along comes another one.
I don't think it is William because the enumerator has used abbreviations for almost all long forenames (See the bottom entry for Wm).
The down strokes from the McCaffre entry has blocked any evidence of upstrokes from the putative Wishart name however I don't think it is.
What it is though I can't even hazard a guess. Sorry!
I wonder if they were still in Cross Street 10 years later ?

It's not a "W", agreed, but what it is, I'm not sure, - I'd want to look at several other pages to see what similarly formed capitals could be found, the downcomer of the "f" in the lien above doesn't help ........... and also see if there's a surname ending in "hart" to see how he forms that.
And I'm not yet convinced that the surname doesn't end in "hart" ......
