Hi All,
Another poser, can anyone work out the occupation of the James Wishart listed on this census image from 1851? http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1043
To me it looks like Practising ???? If it helps, I believe in 1841 he was a physician.
Many thanks,
Scott

Wow!
Practising in DinGwall, & MD of Ed[in]br[gh]
It took me a wee while to come to terms with the enumerator's "G", i.e. capital, even when in the middle of a word, but it's repeated in the Parish box top left, even although, elsewhere, he writes "Dingwall"
His "D"s take some getting used to, - see the two daughters in the first household on the page, - just to keep us on our toes, he varies the form of his capital "D" radically from one line to the next
His capital "F" I've never seen the like of before, and only know that it is an F from the occupation.
Just to add to all this, he uses an occupation that I've never come across before, - "Head Servant" !
Hey, this enumerator is so interesting, that I'm off to look at 1 or 2 previous pages
Later, I think that the puir mannie was getting tired
, after all, the district had taken 6 pages, with many unused lines on pp 3 to 5, - I didn't go any further, and his hand wisnae that guid by p6 on which James Wishart DM occurs (no! - those letters are not the wrong way round
).
Either that or there was an incohol (I mistakenly typed it that way a couple of weeks ago, and so like that spelling that it's what I'll be using in the future
) effect; or his candle was guttering low; or that I've very quickly switched on to his hand, - not impossible, the switching on I mean, not the incohol

Hi David,
Wow indeed! What an occupation! Am I right in thinking that his birthplace is Fortrose? Incidentally, James is the brother of Alexander, who I asked about last summer: viewtopic.php?t=5937
Enjoy your browsing, and thanks again,
Scott

I love the way he continues the downstroke of the "f" upwards to link to the capital "R" of Ross..........
Just noticed, the two Mackenzie kids were born in Canada ..........

Perhaps late March 1851 was a cold one in Dingwall, and the incahol was the only way the wee mannie could keep h'self warm and stop the hand dribbling off the page.....
I can see a short arthouse film in the making, Sir Ian McKellan as the enumerator?
Cheers,
