1871 Census (Paisley?) .....

Post by Caroline » Wed Feb 14, 2007 4:17 pm

Hi again everyone,

I've been searching for my 4x great gran ESTHER CROSSAN or JOHNSTON in the 1871 census but so far I've failed to find her.

In 1861 she was living in McNeil Street in Glasgow with her daughters, Esther(30) and Mary Ann (26). However she died in the Fereneze Inn, Paisley in May 1871 which points to her being in that area at the time of the census.

Also on a later poor relief application by her daughter, Mary Ann, it says that Esther applied to Neilston for poor relief 6 months before her death.

Esther was born in Ireland and would have been 70 to 77 years old in 1871.

As usual any help would be much appreciated!

Hello Caroline,

There is Esther Crossing age 76 living in Barrhead. Could this be her?

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Caroline

Have you looked at this thread

If she was in Paisley, Neilston or Barrhead then the local Poorhouse was this one. She may not have been actually 'in' the Poorhouse but would qualify for support from the parish.
I think Jack said that the records are in the Paisley Library. Perhaps he will correct or confirm this.

Hi Annette,

Sounds very promising - will give it a try!

I thought I'd tried every spelling variation, but never thought of Crossing.

Can't thank you enough.

Hi Russell,

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'd contacted Paisley Library last year and they had no record of her poor relief application. Is there anywhere else I can try?

Hi Caroline and Russell,

I'm not sure where the Renfrewshire Combination Poor House records are, ie if they have survived.
The link for the above says Glasgow Archives have some minutes - not applications.
Whether Paisley Library has any, i'd need to ask - don't think they do though.

Jack
ps - i vaguely mind a pub called the Fereneze Inn not far from the centre of Barrhead.

Hi Caroline
I meant to say first time, that the
Fereneze Inn, Paisley
would be almost on Barrheads doorstep. They would only be a mile or so across the fields.
Paisley has spread out to almost reach The Barrhead boundary now.

I think that Barrhead was a parish in its own right by that time rather than being lumped in under Abbey so the Parish records may exist which might add something. If so they will be listed at the NAS.

Fereneze Inn

We've discussed the Fereneze Inn before.
Also associated with someone dying there.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Just seen your post Lesley. Doesn't seem so spooky since your lot actually lived there. :D
