Hotel boots?

Post by janebromfield » Sat Mar 10, 2007 6:09 pm

I have what looks like 'hotel boots' as an occupation for a relative. Does this make sense to anyone?

Hi Jane,

Try uploading a copy to the gallery. Sometimes it helps if we can see the handwriting. Here's some instructions

Jane,

The most likely match for a census listing for my great grandfather has his occupation listed as "Boots" and shows him living in a hotel with his relationship to the head as "servant", so we're probably dealing with the same thing. I haven't been able to verify it, but I think it may actually be related to boots/shoes as my g grandfather spent most of his life as a shoemaker with his own business. Of course, it's just a guess at this point, so I'm interested to hear what people here come up with.

What about a 'boot boy ' in a hotel - the wee skivy responsible for getting the guests boots mud-free and gleaming?

nearest I can find :

Yes, that's my understanding of a 'boots' working in a hotel.

Hotel Boots

It does seem then that he was in the heady position of cleaning the boots!!! How he got from that to being a golf caddy I'll never know!

Thanks everyone.

Hi Jane:

He probably met a lot of people working in a hotel and someone lured him away to the courses.

Depending of the class of hotel and where it was located, some of those guests may have been able to pay a caddy more than the hotel.

Just a thought,

My Chamber Dictionary defines Boots as a hotel servant who cleans boots, runs messages etc. Presumably, that might also include carrying golf clubs!

hi Muriel

A golf caddy these days, possibly then, too, does a great deal more than just carrying the clubs - he needs to know the game and the course inside out and be able to advise on the best club for each shot, if needed.

Best wishes
