Census 1851 for Seaman .....

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if there is some Census 1851 for Seaman who went on sailing out there from Scotland?

I would like to know if there is some records on seaman on Census 1851 that I am looking for my ggg grandfather's brother Edward Brannan (Brennan/Brannen) who was seaman from Montrose. I wanted to know what ship he went on. But I know that he was seaman lost in Southern Ocean in August 1858 that is what I have on his gravestone at Rosehill cemetery in Montrose.

Please help me to find what ship and I have no idea if he was sailing from Montrose or Dundee or other places. Even I don't know if he was merchant navy or just whaler or seaman but I know that I have his marriage certificate in Montrose, 1852 that he was listed as seaman.

Is there any census for seaman? Pls let me know thank you.

Hi Maggie,

Have you searched SP for his death? My great grandfather was lost at sea in the Bay of Biscay in 1899 but his death was registered in Scotland as he was born there. I found it using the Minor Records selection in the location box on SP.

The certificate should tell you the name of the ship.

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)
