Halbrule Mill, Hobkirk

Hi there

I have couple of old photographs which appear to have come from Halbrule Mill. I have no idea who the people are in the picture. I think they date from 1920s.
One picture shows a man and wife, prob in their 50s, their four grown up daughters I expect and two young girls - probably grandchildren.
The other picture is a little bit older and shows the four daughters a few years before.

I wonder if they are possibly long lost relatives.
does anybody have any idea who lived at Halbrule Mill around that time.

I can't help you with the 1920's, but you might find something relevant in the 1901 census (the latest one we have online access to).

Had a quick wee look on Ancestry. No Halbrule Mill, but there was a Hallrule Mill Cottage. There were other addresses that could be relevant, and these are the folk who lived in them...

(I don't think all those other folk lived in one cottage

It was probably a row of cottages)

There was family called Bell there in the 1901 census but they were in their 60's at that time so it must be somebody who came after them.

Just re-checked the 1901 census - maybe me saying Mill is a red herring. There is also a Halbrule Farm House and the on the back of the photo it says "from all at Halbrule". I got the Mill bit when I googled and put 2 & 2 together..................

You could try finding out if Margaret Bell married and who her children married. Basically, instead of tracing a family back as we usually do, on this occasion you'll have to come forward to find the connection.

Welcome to Talking Scot - glad you've joined us

I'm sure the Laidlaw family in this census are the people in your photo.
In 1920, William & Mary Laidlaw would have been in their 50s and they had at least 2 daughters........
There is definitely a connection between the Laidlaws and Finlaysons - just haven't figured out what yet. My older sister remembers our aunt talking about them but can't remember any details unfortunately.

William Bell died 3 Aug 1911 at Halbrube Mill, he was a widower at the time. His son Alexander was the witness.

It is now called Hallrule Mill.

William and Paula

Helen Bell, farmer died at Halbrule Mill, aged 65 and single in 1920, her father was William Bell. The informant was William L Donald, son in law, he also lived at the Mill.

Margaret Bell married William Donald in 1908 at Hobkirk GROS Data 790/00, 0003. She was grandaughter on the 1901 Census.
