Cencus 1841/51 …..

Post by apanderson » Wed Apr 18, 2007 9:10 am

Could somebody refresh my memory please.

What was the general 'rounding-up' of ages for the 1841 & 1851 Cencus. I can never remember!

Thanks,

Anne

I believe it was the 1841 census where this happened.

1841 only, and rounded down to the nearest 5 for those over the age of 15.

But be careful, as if someone aged 44, say, gave their age as 46, that would be reported as 45 and not the "correct" 40.

Thanks guys,

The wee calculator on my computer is about worn out today - my brain just refuses to do sums (or is that the other way round!)

Hi Anne,

I think the same thing happened to a number of our ancestors when they were supposed to give their age for the census!
