Pollocks/Pollicks

Does anyone have any information on a James Pollock/Pollick or a John Pollock/Pollick who married a Janet Stirling on 15 Oct 1786 in Glasgow Lanark.

Hugh Sterling Pollock's death certificate showed his parents as James Pollock and Janet (no surname). I am thinking the Janet Stirling mentioned above maybe Hugh's mother but can't prove.

Can anyone help me? Thanks.

ARTHUR POLLOCK - Birth: 05 MAR 1787 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARY POLLOCK - Birth: 24 APR 1802 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
CATHERINE POLLOCK - Birth: 20 NOV 1788 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

The only HUGH POLLOCK to a John Pollick and Janet ?? combo seems to be too late for your chap.

Father: JOHN POLLOCK
Mother: JANET WILSON

Thanks very much. That eliminates that Pollock/Sterling thought as those were not his children.

I am having a hard time tracing the parents. Janet (1804) married James Neil on 29 Mar 1831 in Hitcheson town Gorbals, Lanark. She and her family are in the 1841, 1851, 1861 census at 7 Eglington Place, Burgh of Glasgow, Govan Parish District Tradeston.

Janet's birth place is Busby, her sister Agnes (b 1814) was Cathcart, Lanark. Agnes was in 1851 and 1861 census living with Janet but where was she in 1841???

Thanks for your reply - very helpful to dispel my thought that Hugh's middle name may have been his mother's maiden name.

Hello Hugh

Mary offered you the names which were recorded by IGI but that does not mean that the parents are eliminated from your options.
Not all births were recorded prior to 18551 (and a few after that date too).
The family aopppear to have moved around quite a bit. This was much more common than we imagine. They appear to have spent most of the time on the South side of the Clyde and even today you can walk from the centre of the city to the outskirts fairly easily.
If the family moved to an area where the local church was not the Established Church of Scotland later records of their births would not be available to IGI, or to scotlandspeople for that matter. Sometimes you have to come forward a generation to find clues from marriage certificates etc where the branch of religion followed is recorded. This can help guide your searches for the previous generation.

I noticed that you have only a few of the Pollock name variants. Remember that it can also be Polloc/Polok/Polock/+ the 'ic/ick variants too.

I used to live in Pollock which is a huge suburban local authority warren (sorry - housing development. Built with almost no commercial or social amenities in the fifties) Just beyond Pollock house which now houses the Burrell collection.

I have evidence that our early ancestors that came to Canada used the Polick spelling. It was found on a butter stamp and a family Bible.

When I said that settles it i meant the chase of James Pollock and Janet Sterling as the parents. I will persist which have for too many years.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
