Seeking any data and/or images of the following vessels which were owned and operated by my MURRAY (of Saltcoats) ancestors:
Vessel 1: "Isle of May" KY569 built Leith, 1896.
On the night of Wednesday, 30 September 1903, "Isle of May" KY569, owned by Messrs Murray and Co. of Saltcoats was involved in a collision off Tarbet, Loch Fyne with "Maggie Lauder". Both vessels belonging to Ardrossan, the "Maggie Lauder" was so severely damaged she sank in a few minutes, the crew being saved with some difficulty and landed at Ardrossan. This vessel is referred to as a "liner" which probably designates its method of fishing; ie. line and hook fishing rather than netting.
Vessel 2:
"Sunshine" BF510 built G. Innes & Sons, Portknockie, 1907. Wooden Steam Drifter, length 84ft. 1933 - 1939, owned by Mary Russell MURRAY of Saltcoats.
Regards and thanks.

That's great Hugh. As I know the "Sunshine" operated out of either Saltcoats or Ardrossan during period 1933-1939, I have contacted North Ayrshire Local History in case they hold an image of the vessel.
Thanks and regards.

Many thanks for that data Hugh. What with my MURRAYs and McCREADIEs (four Ardrossan brothers - William, Edward (my granpa) James and Peter; all Captains M.N. with James sailing with "Baron" Line), and your g-grandfather (is it?), one cannot help but wonder if they all knew each other eh?
Many thanks again Hugh.
Yours aye.

Hi Jim,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you yes i think every one would of knew each other on the Seafaring side.
Some info for you if you have not seen it already. RE the
Sunshine" BF510 - wooden steam drifter, built by G.Innes and Sons, Portknockie in 1907. In 1910, her owners were listed as Slater & Leask, Portknockie while in 1920 she was owned by A. Slater and others. During period 1933 - 1939 , she owned by Mary Russell MURRAY (nee Robertson) and moved to Saltcoats.
There's a good series of books about the Steam Drifters .
Steam Drifters Recalled .
Portgordon to Portsoy" and "Whitehills to St. Combs" and I think there are a few more in the series covering all of Scotland possibly the entire UK.
The books are published by Joseph Reid , Enzie and David Williamson Cullen
Printed by Almac Print Ltd , Unit 4 Tyock Industrial Estate Elgin IV30 1XY
They cost £12 each and are roughly 150 A4 pages in size.
you may be able to get a photo Jim from the book hope this will help you in your search.

Thanks for that Hugh. I got some vessel info from an Icelandic gent on another site. Mary Russell MURRAY was my great-uncle John's wife. I'll have to ask my wee sister in Saltcoats to attempt to locate those books for me.
Thanks again mate.
